Gear grinding noise going into 4L

Is it normal for anything to make a gear grinding noise when going into 4L? It happened like this:

- driving in 4H, 30 mph
- brake normally to a stop
- put transmission shifter from drive into neutral
- move transfer case shifter from 4H to N, then down to 4L... grrrrrind
- try again and we're off to the races in 4L

Is that normal or something to be worried about?

No. Not normal in my experience. But I have had a situation where it would go into N but not 4L - after putting it back in 4H and reversing a bit, it did it without a problem - hasn't been repeated.
