I'm rebuilding my winch, the mfr says to use "any decent gear grease"....

water-resistance is my #1 (and #2, and #3) concern.
Any recommendations?
Or should I just be looking for "gear grease" at the hardware store?

Thanks!

Most gears run in gear oil.

I don't know what you have available in Costa Rica, but I would pick a high temp moly grease and grease it up. It will likely be better than what was put in at the factory. Since it has to be wet down there, I would err on the side of too much grease to keep the water out.

If you were in the USA, I would reccomend the Syntheticl Moly grease that we use in Birfields.

I'll look around at options.... how about white lithium marine grease? seems that it would do especially well vs. the elements... just not sure if it would work for the gears

warn specs out Aeroshell 17 for thier gears

it is a moly grease with a synthetic base, I use it in my birfs, it is not common you may have to call soem lurication distributers to find some,

• AeroShell Grease 17 is extreme pressure multipurpose grease recommended for heavily loaded sliding steel surfaces where protection against seizure and corrosion is desired; e.g. bogie pivot pins on jet aircraft landing gear assemblies. It is made with synthetic diester base oil, molybdenum disulfide and Microgel non-melting inorganic thickener, which provides outstanding anti-friction bearing lubrication. It has a useful temperature range of -100° F (-73° C) to +300° F (+149° C). AeroShell Grease 17 is qualified under MIL-G-21164D specification.

Thanks Raven,
That seems perfect for birfields or winch gears.
What are you using in the wheel bearings same stuff?

I am using mobil 28 in the wheel bearings, looking back I think that aeroshel 17 may have been a better choice,

Can you explain this RT?

Looking at the AeroShell specs., it would seem that something like AeroShell 22 would be a good option for the wheel bearings.....

Gotta go check out the Mobil 28....;)

I have not had any problems with the 28 to date after about 50K miles, Mobil 28 is specifically a wheel bearing grease, it is what your employer uses in their bearings, but I really wish I could stock one grease and I think 17 might be that grease,

when I selected 28 for the wheel bearings there was some noise floating around the net about molly and wheel bearings being a bad combo, I have since read that that is not the case,

Cool. Thanks for the info.

I'll go check out the maintenance building and maybe snag a couple of tubes....

;)

J/K...

I agree mobil 28 is good stuff.
I persnaly dont like AS 22 . I would much rather use AS 5 thats good sticky stuff.

???? Can you use AS 17 in bearings???

I think so, but have not used it as such,
