Hoping to get some clarification/confirmation on my leak. Photos are being taken from the drivers side under the driver door. From the photos, and my highlighting showing where the leaks are coming from, I believe this is from a failed Gear Box Seal, does that look correct? I have cleaned and will continue to assess where it's coming from...but I think it's coming from the top of the Gear Box and then leaking down to the circled area in the second photo.

If this is indeed the Gear Box Seal, is there anything to do while replacing?

Thanks for any help.

I would remove the bellhousing cover and see if anything is inside.
it could also be the valve cover and pushrod side cover leaking
as asked above, gear oil or motor oil?

Thanks...hoping to get some time this weekend to dive in and will report back.

You and I might be in the same situation. I've got a lot of leaked oil in the same area, and that same rear seal is currently my #1 suspicion. Finally got the transfer case fill plug off earlier this afternoon (thank you, Rocket Socket, scissor jacks and PB Blaster!), so at least I can keep everything lubed while I figure out where the leak is coming from. My next task is to coat the underside with a cleaning foam, clean everything off, then drive it just far enough to see where I get new leaks. Then the real work begins on removing whatever I need to remove, to fix whatever I need to fix. Keep us posted on your progress; I'll do the same.

I just went through this on my 83 FJ 60, my leak was the transmission input shaft seal that was causing 90% of that leak. Also my transfer case leaked from everywhere. So I pulled it and replaced everything I could, rebuilt transfer case , new clutch , RMS, pilot bearing, driveline ujoints etc…
It was my first time doing anything like this. My 2 cents , search the forum there are so many threads on here to learn how to do it and what not to do and how to do it right the first time. Also download the FSM off here. Worst part of the job in my opinion was cleaning it up. So if you decide to do it, here is a piece of advise I got from a fellow mud member, get some big cheap Rubbermaid totes, fill with purple degreaser and drop anything you can in there, the next day 90% of the crud pretty much slides off.

Thanks again. My next question was whether this was too big/complex a job this might be. I suppose everything is relative. I knew a lot of folks here had to have done this job in the past, so the suggestion to go back and read all their suggestions is awesome. No sense reinventing the wheel, or the transmission in this case.

Is it a big job yes, but like I said it was the first time I have pulled a transmission/transfer case in my life. Another good tip, use a good transmission jack., if you do decide to tackle the job. Do “everything “ will it is out, my clutch worked fine but since I had it out put all new in, might as well don’t want to do all the work again. Here is a link to a must watch video if you decide to tackle it, makes rebuilding transfer case not seem so difficult.
