Woody or any moderator. If this is in the wrong section please let me know and move it to the appropriate or delete. I got this from the guidelines section and I beleive I am posting in the right one. Just didn't want to step on any toes.

Ok I have had about a half a dozen people contact me in the last year wanting to know how to import or find a FJ43. I tried my best to help them out but nobody was willing to put any money down to a guy over seas when they had never driven the vehicle and or met that person. I don't blame them. I would never send thousands of dollars to some random person either. But I did once and it worked out for me. Others I have heard it has not.

I'm contemplating bringing them into the country for resale. I wanted to know what the REAL interest was if I went ahead and did it. Do people want pristine 100% restored cruisers, those that need some work that you can customize, or one that has already been "Colombian Customized :grinpimp:". There are a few different ways to go about it but to make it the simplist I'm planning on just buying them out-right for resale. I don't want to become a dealer (I have a more than full time job as a Black Hawk Pilot in the Military) but I wanted to find a more efficient way to actually get some more of these in the country as obviously the "do what I did and hope it works out for you too" model was not working.

What is the general price range you are willing to pay? Obviously some out there were willing to pay over $40K for the other one that came over with mine and it was probably worth it...it was a very nice vehicle. But I understand most people won't, can't, or don't want to pay that much for one. From what I've seen they range from 5+K to 30K down there. Shipping is the cheap part...Paper work, Brokers (on both sides), Uncle Sam, the EPA, and the fight against the almost non existent drug war down there accounts for the rest.

Anyways let me know and if you have specific questions I will do my best to answer them. Most if not all are gasoline models, but may end up working on bringing other Diesel models from Europe is this goes well. I have been wanting to do this for awhile but as the economy dove I decided it was a bad time. But after all of the interest and sadly not seeing any luck for others trying I thought this would be a good way to contribute to the community. Some of the early 70 series are starting to come into the 25 year window but there is really nothing special about them other than they are not rusted to hell like all the ones we get from Canada. Sadly they are all base models and all gasoline though.

Thanks,
Jason

The mid wheel base is really perfect for more than 2 people and room for stuff. You can fit decent seats in the back and still have room for all you camping/hunting etc stuff. I love my bj44. Worth the extra dough to import a decent one IMO. Good luck with this!

I think they are cool trucks, but your biggest obstacle will probably be due to people's limited exposure to them in the states. I've put a few miles on one, and the vents in the top that blow fresh air right on the driver's and passenger's heads are pretty sweet. They have a lot more to offer than just a little more room than a 40. The front drum brakes and lack of a heater will probably be a hangup for some, the H41 and the FF rear will be a big plus for others.

I think quality like this in the $10k-$12k range would do pretty well. Closer to the $20k range not so much.

If someone would tell the Treasury Department to stop printing money like a game of Monopoly than MAYBE just Maybe you could get something like that here in the 25K range. But you can get some here in the 10-12K I think but they would need to either be enjoyed and wheeled as is, or completely restored. For instance I was just looking at one that was over 20K down there. That is just the purchase price. But then you have those like a faded green one I found and it is going for about 7K. They also have some pretty clean 70 series that go for around 10K. I also found a 1984 that was super clean for about 20K. It had a 5 speed transmission and what appeared to be factory A/C. My understanding is the 84 was a pretty rare year but there seems to be at least a couple down there. Maybe only rare to the U.S. I don't know.

Haha maybe I could do a two for one deal. Buy one FJ43 and get an F20 twin for free!!! I was looking around at some early Diahatsu F20's and in Colombia they have the same aftermarket tops. They are like mini-me's.

I think you hit something there. Our dollars are worthless anywhere else in the country, and are starting to be worthless even here. It's going to be hard to buy a truck over seas, pay the currency rate, ship it, pay the duty, and come out ahead I am afraid. People wonder why Japanese cars cost so much here, it's because our dollar is worth like .50 to theirs.

There seems to be a lot of interest in the 15K range though I haven't dialed down what type of quality you can get for that price. Rust is not an issue down there and they are usually in fairly good mechanical shape. It just depends how STOCK you want to stay and the small things like interior and paint.

If I get a couple more serious hits I think I'm going to import one cheaper one for those interested in the 15K range and another a little nicer if I can find some pocket change around the house to fund it. The FJ43 restore has begun so I either need to pull the funds saved for that away to this project or keep the costs down.

Thanks and any more input is just fine.

I also found out that those Daihatsu's are actually made with a lot of toyota influence and parts. It appears the hard tops are made in the same factory as those made for the Land Cruisers down in Colombia and the engines are 12R Toyota engines. I'm trying to figure out what transmissions and axles they have. Very interesting. I guess they also came to other countries as the Toyota Blizzard.

I'm interested. Keep me posted.

Was about to pull the trigger last night but the car in question had sold.

Would there be any interest in a 1FZ carb'd version with 5 speed transmission and dual fuel (gas/CNG)?

I know there is a lot of CNG when you get out west towards Utah.

The decision has been made. It is not a perfect example but will be a fun one to work on and get ready. I don't plan on keeping it for ever. One of the two will be fore sale soon. Been considering selling my FJ43 that I originally brought in though to mess around with this one.

It isn't here yet or the deal complete so I won't post any pictures.

Basic details are 1982 FJ43 Softop. 1FZ with 5 speed manual out of newer truck, PS, Discs up front, and A/C Compressor (wish i still had my parts car) but not the rest of the A/C system. Is a Bi-fuel car with HUGE CNG tanks as well has stock gas tank. Thinking of adding the extra 22gallon gas tank I have and making it one heck of a expedition truck.

Will post pics in the next few weeks once finalized.

This FJ43 is not sold yet but I have had a lot more interest than I thought I would and a few offers that were pretty close but not quite there. Hopefully sold within the next week or two.

On the other hand I'm very eagerly looking at bringing in a BJ43. Trying to get the details on it now. Looks all original and like it has the LX style interior. Has a few issues I can see right off the bat but much cleaner than the vehicle I just brought in. Has a high mileage 3B.

If you are interested in a presale though let me know. I don't really have the money to throw at it right now with everything else going on with all of the soft top parts.
