Doing the infamous 2UZ-FE timing belt change on 1999 Cruiser. When I took the thermostat assembly off the water pump I saw no gasket, only black RTV. Its a rectangular opening with 2 fastener 'ears'. Yet an online vide for the same job on a 2002 Tundra clearly shows a gasket. Question: Should there be a gasket, did Toyota install one from the factory? The kit I bought with the timing belt, idler/tensioner bearings, tensioner spring, etc. did not come with this gasket but that may not mean there shouldn't be one there.

Please advise and thanks to the list. Thomas

Yes there should be one, it's part #16346-50010. Also get a tstat while you are in there, it's 90916-03100. cheap insurance and they do go bad and can throw a code when not operating properly. You can get it from @beno or @cruiserdan on here

Thanks Arcteryx. I may have confused this by using the term bypass. My kit does have the O-ring that seals the round connection between the thermostat assy and water pump, it is the rectangular port connection (2 flat faces) I'm talking about. I looked up the part number you provided, it shows the O-ring. Would you know if there is a different part number for the flat face gasket?

You may want to check year model for that square gasket. I dont think the older ones used it. If they did then I need to take mine back apart. I just used the sealant and do not have any leaks

Yes, all indications are pointing to no gasket used for this joint on a 1999 Land Cruiser. Toyota doesn't show it in the system diagram for this year. My kit didn't have it, the vehicle didn't have it, I will go with the straight sealer. Its not that hard to get to if it does leak.

Thank you, appreciate the help.

Agree with ton504, on my '06 it was fipg. I used the Permatex water pump and thermostat gasket maker and let it cure overnight.

Check the cooling section of the FSM (CO-8), it tells you how much FIPG to use (2-3mm bead in the groove).
