Reads fine when full but as soon as it gets below 3/4 tank it drops to the bottom and the light comes on. Any ideas? The tank isn't leaking, just not registering any fuel being there.

thanks
tom

My 98 100 would drop to empty with the light on then sloooooowly the needle would rise.. If I wanted to show the correct amount quickly I would turn the vehicle off then on.. worked every time..

Hasn't done it lately and was thinking about it yesterday.. Does the wiring from the tank/fuel pump/sending unit come up behind the tail light on left ? I was trying to get the trailer lights to work and was messing with the wiring harness there and if I remember right, haven't had the gage problem since..

Every once in a while my tank reads empty, even though it's full or near full. I just turn the car off and restart and it fixes itself. Common problem here?

Mine seems to be worlking normal again. Jumped around some at half tank though.

I had the same problem with my Sub-Tank...I noticed it on the first week I owned my 2005 V8 and thought it used a lot of fuel....

After complaining to my dealer, they tell me it's a common problem and it is usually traced back to the sender unit. Australian dealers have a press release from Japan in which they are aware of the problem and just replace the sender without questions. They replaced my sender unit under warrantee and all is now perfect.

Reviving a dead thread

When I fill up the needle drops to 3/4 of a tank after as little as 10 miles.

This time it dropped from 3/4 to 1/4 over night.
I've driven 30 miles since then and now it's on Empty and the low fuel light is on.

So either I've used 20+ gallons to drive 100 miles, my tank is leaking or something is wrong with the gauge.

I'm going to fill it up after work and see what happens.

Someone on here replaced their fuel gauge signal sender or something under warranty and it fixed a similar issue. Does anyone have details and cost on how to do that?

99 LX with approx 160k miles - My fuel gauge reads low, with light on, all the time. Started as described above, slowly sinking, then off all the time. Switching ignition OFF then ON helped initially, now nada. I replaced the sender in the fuel tank (130 dollars approx) and it worked for about 5 mins, then went to empty and has stayed there. My next effort will be to follow the wires back to the dash - any advice on its location? Also - the FSM has an error on the diagnostics page about checking the sending unit - should be volts not ohms my old sender passed the tests - leads me to believe it is somewhere else in the system, but then the new one got it working briefly - not sure about it. Any comments would be appreciated.
