While towing a camper from Grand Junction, CO to Ouray, CO we stopped after driving an hour to top off the tank and gas vapor started coming out under pressure causing gas to overflow. I put the cap back on and left it untwisted to try to let the pressure equilibrate. But after a couple minutes it was still under pressure. Previously we had trouble with a bunch of warning lights turning on while towing the camper up a steep mountain road. The truck has always performed well and the lights are off next time we turn the truck on. We changed out the gas cap for an aftermarket one for the warning light problem but we are still having trouble. Any ideas or advice welcome. Thanks.

Gas vapor pressure changes from winter to summer as well as by location altitude but that sounds like something is pressurizing your tank. Hopefully someone that knows the fuel and emission control system will have an idea and chime in

I believe the fuel system is designed to operate under a small amount of pressure. Mine releases pressure every time it's opened. There are threads here that address that.

Your charcoal canister is getting overwhelmed. It may be wet with fuel. Don't top off at the pump.

I've heard people say that you can never dry them out, but I stopped filling all the way up for while and now I've been good for a while.

Summer heat plus altitude can really build pressure. Open your cap slowly or you could end up with the gas face. (obscure 3rd Bass reference) but in all seriousness, gas can and will pour right out if pressure is built way up.

I still occasionally have to vent the cap when I go over 10,000 feet.
