I switched from Avenza Maps gps on my iphone and now use Gaia GPS.
Gaia GPS
It is very easy to use compared to some other apps including Avenza.
For my trip this summer I downloaded free gpx trail/route files from Funtreks, a group that sells books of cool trails organized by (western) state.

Importing the gpx files to my Gaia account then downloading large land areas to my phone allow me to navigate offroad without cell tower wifi or cell signals.
With Gaia GPS, you can also do the reverse by recording your travels then sharing the generated files with others.

I did some searching on MUD but did not find much info on shared trail info and gps files.

Does anyone know what might be involved with starting a repository of trail files and info?

I think all apps are intuitive for 23 year-olds.
I have had very good luck googling for specific problems.
I find it easiest on my pc.

Probably the best solution would be to start a google drive folder that would be public. Depends on if you want to maintain it, or want to delegate that to someone else. I feel like the open-season policy wouldn't go well. I'm sure mud admins wouldn't want to have gpx files flooding their servers either.

What's the purpose? Share gpx files for trails or routes you've been on so others can use them? That's the basis of what apps like Gaia are already built around.

I would suggest having a shared google drive folder so we aren't locked into an app. Google has a better outlook longevity-wise than any map app.

That being said, I just made one if you want to start using it.

Bookmark the folder or whatever works best and upload your files. The only issue from a security perspective is that by allowing anyone with this link to edit files in the folder (uploading gpx files for example), they also have permissions to remove files. I can't imagine there would be much demand for griefing a trails folder, but we could also set it up as a request-to-add style where someone just emails me their gpx files they want to add and then I can add them. Viewer permissions allow downloading the files if they're already there.
