Okay thinking out loud here and curious what others have to say.

I've owned and driven numerous models and equipped with numerous different engines land cruiser but never an 80, 100, or 200 series. My wife has a subaru and the thing is incredible on slippery highway conditions. Certainly better than my HZJ77 in 2WD in the same conditions.

Is the full time 4wd in let's say an 80 series anything like a Subaru? If so can I simply swap a centre diff, attach it to my H55F 5 speed manual along with an ECU and some wheel speed sensors and call it a day? Has this been done? Or am I really not missing out on anything?

I do know there were Full-time 4wd HZJ80's. My best guess is you would need to go to a A442F or A343F transmission to use the HF2AV transfer case.

Thanks for the leads guys. After some more digging it would seem I would need to swap to a H150F transmission to retain manual 5 speed and mate it to a HF2A transfer case. I could use a H151F as well but the H150F has lower first gears.

It doesn't seem a H55f was ever attached to a full time 4wd so an adapter would be needed to make that work.

In my opinion the locking center diff/ full time 4wd is THE BEST system for poor weather. I learned to drive in an 80, and it was absolutely unstoppable in snow and ice. To me it feels much better than the subaru. I think it must be the added weight and tire contact patch, but it feels much better to me. That said I'd put my current BJ73 in 2wd up as equal to my mother's 2014 subaru for sketchy weather handing. The sube just feels a little skittish to me. Where the subaru probably wins is once you screw up it has all the traction control and stuff to save you. That said if the condition are at all slick just run 4hi, and there's no harm in it. That'll be equal or better than full time, and it costs nothing.
