Today I took my 93 FZJ80 into emissions testing for the first time since I've owned it.

They had me pull up and place my rear tires onto the rollers. Guy looked at it and saw the emblem on the back "Full Time 4WD." "You get the basic test and save $10".

They stuck a sniffer on the muffler, revved it once or twice and then shut the hood. 5 minutes after arriving and $18 later I was on my way home with a easily passing grade.

So the test for these full-time vehicles is less strict and cheaper... and quicker. Lucky me.

Could be that he didn't have the right equipment for full-time 4wd. In CA, if the smog shops have the right equipment, they'll use it, if not, the do the standard test. No discount either way though.

On an OBDII Cruiser like my 1996, they do nothing but plug it in, start it up and if no check light signals, then it passes. They don't even rev it. Bunch of $$ and off you go!

In CO, they do a highway and load test on a 4wheel dyno and with big tires on the dyno the big cruiser bounces back and forth scaring the crap out of you as some 17 year old `drives' it.
