About 3 yrs back I was having an overwhelming smell of gas permeate the cab of my 89'-62. I took it to a mechanic and he said it was corroded fuel vent lines that had disconnected. He said it was no big deal and would not affect anything but would take away the smell. He plugged them with bolts and gasket sealer. The smell went away and I have had no problems. The lines I'm talking about are behind the rear vinyl panel, above the right rear tire.

Has anybody else expierienced this? Is this current fix ok? Thanks for any suggs.---CB

im not exactly sure but, Unless the tank has more than one vent line you might need those vent lines.

But if you have had no other problems i guess you are okay. It might be possible that the "venting" is being done out the gas cap and it is achieving the desired affect,

remember i have no idea though just throwing an opinion out there.

thanks for the feedback. Yeah I have never had a single performance problem associated with the fix, but once that fuel smell went away I did not gear near as sick when driving my rig, imagine that. Anybody else know anything about the importance of fuel vent lines and the possible side affects of capping them off?--CB

I beleive those lines go to the fuel vapor separator which is not the only vent from the tank. There is another hard line vent that runs to the charcoal canister and maybe another that vents to the inner fender. I don't think you will run into any problems since your fuel system is still being vented. That's my guess on it.

Wrong, but a good guess anyway.;p
There are 4 vent hoses coming off the tank that all go to the fuel vapor separator. From the separator, one vapor line runs forward to the canister.

If every vent hose to the separator has been removed and plugged, then the tank is only venting through whatever leaks exist in the filler neck.

Not the safest setup, but if it hasn't exploded yet, it must be OK.:)

Now I know, thanks FJ40Jim. I would just replace the lines or any other parts that are cracked or damaged then.

For the life of me I can't remember which lines get replaced under the standing recall on the fuel tank (some of them do), but if yours hasn't been done yet, it might be worth checking out with your local dealer. At worst you could get a brand new fuel tank out of the deal.

found that info posted in this thread: https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=20463&highlight=recall+gas+tank

there is a certficate there to take to the dealer at the first link. if you don't know wheter or not yours has been done yet the dealer should be able to do a quick search for your VIN to determine wheter or not the tank has been replaced. or, as posted previously: "Don't bother with the dealer to check-call Toyota of America. I did that last year via their contact info on their home page. The rep was great, told me immediately whether or not my '83 60 had the safety recall done on the tank (it didn't) and the seatbelt (it did). He then told me to schedule the appointment with my local dealer, who would then have to order the parts." (by crucible)

good to know that Toy of A can search with VIN to see if all recalls have been done or not.
