Fuel tank capacity issue for MY16/17/18 Land Cruiser

It's not exclusive to the LC/LX or even Toyota.
I have seen the same thing with my business trucks at least on the Tundra's as well as our Nissan's we have 2017/18 Titan's, 2017 Armada's and Qx80s all seem to have a hidden 5 gallon reserve at 0 miles to empty .
I am without a doubt not a fan of this feature or flaw whatever you prefer to call it, I do know it is normal. I would simply prefer the gauges/info screens only show me accurate info not intentionally misleading info.
Nor to buy the whole keeping the fuel pump cool theory so often sited on this topic, that one has always seemed a little far fetched to me.
I suppose they want us to fill up as soon as the warning light comes on since these big suv likes LC, QX80 etc. are really bad fuel efficiency, the hidden 4-5 gal might run out quickly particularly during off road driving.

Off-road fuel efficiency is not as bad as you would think. It's actually just about the same as regular use. Because the speeds are far lower, and it's not wasting energy to punch holes in the air.

Towing is indeed the case where 5 gallons can evaporate into thin air. In a worst case, up a steep grade, against wind, on a hot day, I've seen MPG drop into the mid single digits. So that cushy 50++ miles of additional range, becomes more like mid 20s. Living in the west, I've been in that predicament at least 3 times now. So like others, I now carry a 3.5 gallon tote, as margin for the margin. Can't wait to get an aux tank.
