I'm sure someone has posted on this before but being new I can't find it anywhere. I'm looking to try to replace my fuel pump. Can someone help me out with location and some tips? The ole cruiser is having some starting issues that I've narrowed down to not being the starter. All I can think now is that it has to be my fuel pump. Any help would be great! Thanks guys!

I suck at the search function, but the access hatch is beneath the middlle row seats on the drivers side. You need to pull the 60% seat and peel up the carpet (this will involve removing the step plate on the side of the seat and some trim pieces) (you may be able to get to the access panel without pulling the seat buy just tumbling it forward) the panel is circular, about 5-6 inches across and has two screws. The fuel pump is retained by a a metal ring with 8-12 screws around the circumference. Once removed I think the pump pulls right out.

Perfect! Thank you! Yah I'm gonna see if that fixes the issue, it's been on and off for a year and I've never replaced the fuel pump. At 218,000 miles now. That's all I can think of, it takes two or three or more sometimes key turns for it to start up. It wants to and it tries sometimes but sometimes it just clicks. So thinking maybe it just doesn't have enough fuel pressure to get going. Hopefully this fixes it! Thanks man!

Detroithp77, you may want to describe the problem, as to if the starter "cranks"/"turns" when you turn the key or if it just "clicks" as you turn the key. The issue maybe your starter/battery/wiring. With more info, the knowledge base on IH8MUD may be able to help you diagnose the real issue before tearing into the fuelpump and spending money/time on something that may not be the issue. I'm not saying that it is not the fuelpump but members on here, with more information, may point you in the right direction. Just my two cents. Have been there before, replacing and repairing things and it turns out ot be something else. Good luck.

Thank you, yah that would be great, the issue is just that over the last prob year and a half when I go to start her up she either just clicks or struggles to start up. I've replaced the started relay fuse and I'm not convinced that it's the starter because it'll go long periods at times not doing it at all. Then maybe weeks or months of doing it again. I've replaced the battery, cleaned the terminals thoroughly. I guess it could be my wiring but i don't even know where to begin if that's the issue. Having not replaced the fuel pump ever that's the first thing that comes to mind. Any help would be great, I'm hoping to avoid replacing the starter as it's a pain in the ass.

Yah original starter. I just don't know how it could be that when it goes long periods without doing it. And you sometimes it wants to start but just struggles. So it's not like it's not hitting bc it is. It's just can't get going. And then other times it just clicks and I don't get any fire

(in my 100) That is exactly the starter starting to fail. It will 'click' occasionally, then be fine for weeks/months then start up again. I'm on my second starter at 185k.

Unfortunately the starter is under the intake manifold, but it isn't difficult to pull. The starter bolts can be difficult - but if you pull off your hood you can easily access them from the top. Pulling off the hood is 4 bolts, and if you have help about 3 minutes. (Without help, 10 minutes).

My vote is it's the starter.

I have 168,000 miles on my 2000 and I'm planning to rebuild the original starter this summer as preventative maintenance.

I think your fuel pump is fine.

+1 on the starter. My needed a new one at 160K with same symptoms.

What are the odds it's just some crazy electrical malfunction my A/T oil temp light has been acting funny as well, coming on immediately when I start the car but only in park and going off all the rest of the time could it be some crazy wires?

Our hundy did the exact same thing and replacing the starter solved it.
Even had the new starter on the shelf for 6 months as it stopped acting up for a while. Then it started again so I replaced it. Problem gone.

FYI denso fuel pumps are great and don't fail often... I swapped out the original pump in my mini truck at 300k miles as the box was off and it was easy to get to... It was still functioning perfecty and was over 25 years old...

Wow! Great, yah I'll prob end up replacing both of them, I think I've got some electrical issues also so trying to sort through it all. My headlight will go on and off at times. Who knows! I just wanna save my baby! She's been too good to me!

My fuel pump went out at 310k. No warning. Started fine in the morning to good to work. At lunch break it started put it in gear and it died.

Sometimes a leaky windshield can cause electrical gremlins. Did you have a new windshield installed lately? Search this forum and see if your symptoms are the same.
Hmmm interesting! I didn't have a windshield replacement but I have noticed the weather stripping along the windshield coming up the last few months! I'll look into it! Thanks!

I second the possibility of the windshield issue. Check the emblems on your windshield to see if it was replaced before you owned it (if aftermarket).

It doesn't sound like a fuel pump is your issue. But one easy way to tell is if it's acting up, and you think that might be it..... Disconnect the fuel filter and turn the ignition to accessory (with a helper). If there's fuel flowing, the fuel pump is working.
