I tore into my parts FZJ80 tonight, a rolled 1993. The plan is to put this engine / trans / tcase combo into a 1992 FJ80 with a very tired and burning oil 3FE... The more I tear into it to keep the harness in tact I realize the more a total bitch this might be... Those of you guys who have swapped V8s, what did you do about transmission and did you totally eliminate the stock computer which seems to control both engine and trans? What did you do about speedometer etc? What did all of you V8 guys do for your computer setups?

Does anyone think putting the later computer into the earlier truck might possibly be plug and play or something close to it, or are there sensors etc that the 1FZ has that the 3FE does not. Will I have to completely swap harnesses and is the dash much different or redesigned with the FZJ80 versus the FJ80? (I have not seen the FJ80 yet)... I am starting to get the willies about the wiring part of it...

Much appreciated... Andre

diesel- not sure what you were referring to with the "stock computer which seems to control both engine and trans" comment, but if you were talking about the 80's stock ECUs, the engine and tranny ECUs on '93-94 80s are separate. They were combined on the '95-97 models.

You will need to swap engine harnesses and ECU's between the trucks. If you have the electrical Serveice manual for both truck it will greatly speed up your dash wiring reconfiguration at the ECU. I'm sure there will be a couple head scratchers but I cannot see the swap being more than say a    job. If you dive into this please start a thread on this forum for future referance. Good luck!

That is what I was hoping someone would not say.. Getting the harness out without damaging the dash will be a bitch I figure.. Here is the one from the FZJ80 that I removed last night, it was much easier to simply rip out the dash in a few places... I have a feeling there will be a lot of time spent with the harness...

Also, I assumed that the computer controls both the engine and trans because it says on the computer "1FZ engine, A442F Transmission." But good to know. I have a stack of little computer-looking boxes, most of which I believe I know what they are but I'll have to look more carefully to figure out which computer is the trans controller... Yes, I will be getting the complete factory wiring diagrams shortly which of course will be tremendously helpful... Thanks, Andre

That is a bitch of a job. You are better off locating a 80 with a blown 1FZFE and swapping the good motor into that. When I uilt the ShortBus, we swapped a rolled 93 sab for a 92. The harnesses are not even close to the same, nor is the rest of the parts behind the dash. I don't think it is worth the time.

good to know...

It turns out the 1992 FJ80 actually doesn't have worn rings, just burning a little coolant so it looks like it is probably just a bad head gasket luckily. So I think we are going to pursue replacing the head gasket / head machine work instead of the engine swap... Bummer in one regard but at the same time probably the smartest thing to do and I think I'll probably just sell the 1FZ / Trans / T-Case combo, hopefully to someone looking to do a swap...

I agree on the complete dash swap out. You will need the whole dash wiring b/c the transmission wiring takes a crazy route. the main harness starts about where the transmission and engine meet on the drivers side frame rail. this then blends in with the fuel injection, emissions and electrical system and heads through the firewall near the air conditioning lines on the passenger side. from there some wires head to the engine control system behind the glovebox and the thens head to the drivers gauge cluster and transmission control. on my truck the ect is located near the drivers door pillar. It would be a ton of work to interface the 92 dash to the 93 up ect and ecm.

My deal is far different with my swap b/c I am re-routing and massaging the information coming from the toyota retro'd and gm engine sensors heading to the toyota ect. I have a ton of time in wiring on my truck and still have a lot to go.

I bet I could chop your two bodies up and make 1 good truck quicker than swap engines and dashes.

regards

Kirk
