Fuel gauge not working

87 fj60 can't seem to figure out why my fuel gauge is not working. Is there a unit in the fuel tank that measures it? and/ or could it be in the dash board? where would you start?

I am looking at checking the wire (connection) between the sending unit? and the gauge in the dash board. Has anybody done this before? any tips?

You might try filling the tank with fuel and or drive it on an incline.My float sticks from time to time mostly after it has not been driven for awhile

Usually the problem is a corroded connection at the fuel sender.

Roll up the rear carpet, remove access panel, clean electric connections, test.

Mine also tends to work only once in a while. Lately it's been working fine, I might have to check the connection this weekend.
