Because of very dusty environments (Australia, North Africa etc.) a pre-filter is mounted in front of the main filter - see picture from my australian 1HZ engine compartment

In australia from 84 to 95 ,the pre filter was an option and after 95,it became standard. For some reason my 95 troopy doesnt have one ,although it has the double bracket.
Maybe it was removed by a PO.
Its designed to take out the larger particles and help the main filter last longer. The prefilter cartridge is much cheaper ,$6-7 than the main filter$29
