I recently towed my 81' 40 to yellowstone. By the time I got there the front tires had signifigant wear on them and are cupped very badly. These were almost new BFG mud terrains and the front tires have lost well over half of their tread after about 3000 miles of towing. The fj seems to drive just fine though. No pulling either way. It tracks pretty straight when you let go of the wheel. obviously something is wrong, I can't keep trashing tires. Anyone have a similar problem. i'm not sure a front alignment will fix the problem although it has to be the first place to start. Any front end alignment experts out there? Thanks

About the only thing you can adjust on the 40 is the toe-in which doesn't usually cause cupping on the front. Plus you said it tracks straight.
That's usually caused by something like worn shocks, out of balance tires, worn wheel bearings, and stuff like that.

I'm no tire guy though and could be completely off base... :D

I'm assuming they're cupping on the inside edge? Go get your alignment checked. Most shops charge about $60 to do the job. Lots cheaper than new tires every 3000 miles.

I ain't no 'lignment expert, but I'd think that 0" toe in/out and some decent amount of caster would get'er to track down the road without wearin out the tires.
