Over the course of the last month I went from no leaks, then to a few drips, now to a three inch oil puddle after 10 minutes of idling.
Oil appears to be leaking heavily behind the plastic timing belt cover behind the harmonic balancer. It's dripping out from along the bottom edge and down the timing belt tensioner. The (well overdue) timing belt service was already in my near term plans so replacing the front seal really isn't an inconvenience for me.
However, this seems to be an incredibly rare problem. Like, I did agressive mud searching and could not find a single other case of a 4.7 with a leaking front seal. I find it odd that the seal replacement many consider optional has turned into a huge issue in my case.
So here's my tech question- Is there anything else I should try to anticipate (in terms of time/money/parts availability) before tearing into my daily driver? Is there any reason you wouldn't tackle this repair as just another timing belt job (with lots of extra oil clean-up)?
