Over the course of the last month I went from no leaks, then to a few drips, now to a three inch oil puddle after 10 minutes of idling.

Oil appears to be leaking heavily behind the plastic timing belt cover behind the harmonic balancer. It's dripping out from along the bottom edge and down the timing belt tensioner. The (well overdue) timing belt service was already in my near term plans so replacing the front seal really isn't an inconvenience for me.

However, this seems to be an incredibly rare problem. Like, I did agressive mud searching and could not find a single other case of a 4.7 with a leaking front seal. I find it odd that the seal replacement many consider optional has turned into a huge issue in my case.

So here's my tech question- Is there anything else I should try to anticipate (in terms of time/money/parts availability) before tearing into my daily driver? Is there any reason you wouldn't tackle this repair as just another timing belt job (with lots of extra oil clean-up)?

Thanks. I've taken a look at the various timing-belt DIY articles; the pictures and instructions provided by other mudders are gold. I ordered my parts from Beno and I'm going to go forward with the assumption that I'm not overlooking the potential for anything simple (or catastrophic).

180k, mine leaks. Didn't realize how bad (or where the leak was from) until replacing the timing belt/water pump.

Just pulled it out by shooting a sheet rock screw (carefully) into the seal, pulled right out. Popped the new one in and pressed it flush with a cardboard tube. $8 seal.

Thankfully, I had it ready to go with my order of TB parts. The only part I had to run to the dealer for was the serpentine tensioner, other pulleys looked fine (replaced all TB pulleys). Replaced water pump too (just starting to leak). Cam seals looked fine.
