New member here. I have found this site very helpful, but today i have a question i have not found an answer to through searches. What size is the central nut on the front hub of my 96 Land Cruiser? The two big ones that hold everytihg in place. I will tackle the front rotors this weekend, but do not have a socket in the 30-32-34 mm range (which i suspect this is), and would like to purchase one before I get too far into the job. thanks!

will socket fit over the axel?

thanks for the response, KZ. -- Have you ever tried to get into the hub? Wondering if the socket will even fit far enough onto the axel for this to work. Perhaps I should just break out the channel locks. I have hear that dealers have a special tool for this purpose, which makes me wonder if it is doable in my ill-euipped garage

read your first post again. i realized you're only after removing the rotor. in that case you don't need to open the hub. just swing out the calipers and give the rotors a few bumps with a rubber mallet and off it goes.

i bought a 36 mm socket wrench just for that nut.. it doesn't go that deep.

just the rotors

I dunno - i have some schematics from the dealer that shows i have to yank out inner and outer bearings, seals, snap wrings, washers, two big nuts, all kinds of stuff to get the rotors off. was gonna have at it today, but it is 0 degrees in my unheated garage... and the torpedo heater will not be so effective. so, hopefully tomorrow..

if it's a 96 then it's either a 90/95 series Prado or a LC80. if it's a prado, you're in the right forum, if it's a LC80, then you should go to the 80-series forum. The series number (i.e., 90/95, 80/81, 70/76, etc) has nothing to do with the year model.

you can check the manufacturer's plate or the door (b-pillar) sticker and check the vehicle code. the prado should show one of these: KZJ95, VZJ95, RZJ95. The LC80 should show one of the ff: FZJ80, FZJ81, FJ80, FJ81, HDJ81, HZJ81

on the prado:
i've remove the rotors a few times and in all of these times, i never had to open the hub.
i only had to unbolt the calipers and gave the rotors a few bumps with a rubber mallet.

when replacing cv boots, i did open the hub: remove the cover, remove the cotter pin, remove the nut cup, then remove the 36-mm nut.

i was looking at the front hub diagram of the LC80 and it does seem that you have an LC80 basing on your description of having to remove the hub before removing the rotors.
