I just rebuilt the front axle hub on the passenger side. Installed new axle seal, wiper kit, spindle brgs, gaskets, the works! When I 1st noticed oil leaking from the burfield joint (did i spell that right?) i thought immediately that the wiper seals were going bad. After doing a little investigation, I found that its not the wiper seals that is the problem...The axle seal gets bad and lets front diff. fluid leak into the hub. Then the diff. fluid mixes with the hub grease and leaks out the inside of the burfield joint. If I would have just replaced the wiper seals, I'd still have the same problem after hours of greasy work! So I guess I'm writing this for 2 reasons...1) might as well replace EVERYTHING when tearing these bad boys down. 2) does anybody have an easier way of getting the old axle seal out? I almost created a bigger problem trying to get the seal out with a screwdriver and hammer. Is there a tool for this?

FYI, front axle service is one of the most common topics on this forum. There's lots of info to be found around here by using the search feature. Admittedly, I had the same misconception as you did many years ago on my '85 4-runner. There is a tool known as a seal puller that you could have used.

I used a T type seal puller from Craftsman. It cost about 8 dolares. Popped them right out.
