Ive been eyeing this fridge for the last few months.. it's been on craigslist forever. Anyhoo, would you go ahead and pick this up or spend the extra couple hundred and get a new unit instead from Engel or ARB?

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/sgv/spo/261731405.html

The seller doesnt know how old it is and is really firm on the price.

What would you do?

That looks like an early- to mid-90's model. I don't mean to throw this in your face at all, but I picked up that same model on craigslist for $150, barely used, a few months ago. Sure, the new ones retail for a lot more, but they are new, come with a warranty, and as far as I can remember, use less amps. The new ones use as little as 2.2 amps, and that model will use 5.5 amps. The shell material on the newer models is just much more efficient at insulating, and require less energy to cool.

I think $500 is a touch steep, considering that with a little patience and some consistent research, you might be able to pick one up somewhere else for much less. Not to mention, the older ones retailed for around $500 when they were new.

If that seller really is asking $500 firm and it's as old as Shahram think's, I'd go with a new Engel.

Kurt at Cruiseroutfitters (board sponsor) has new 43 qt Engels for $680 and the same in ARB for $750. For $180 more than the Norcold on craiglist, you can have a brand new one!

Thanks for info, that's exactly what i was thinking.. i just dont know my models. If its that old and draws that many amps, i'll just go with a new ARB unit. I want the temp read out.

I'll probably just go with expedition exchange since its cheaper than Cruiseroutfitters and i dont have to pay for shipping. 4 wheelersupply is cheap too.

Thanks for the fast replies.

I have a line on getting some coolmatic models at cost, there are cheeper than an engel but the case is high impact abs and not metal, compressor is the same... they seem to be popular overseas just not sold here for 4x4 use... they are manufactured by Wesso and from what I have seen work great. I called again today and when I get some firm prices I will let you know...

I wouldnt touch it with a pole!

Keep searching! I found one BRAND NEW with a warranty from a scratch and dent place (http://www.ronthebusnut.com) for $475 and the thing was mint other then a small blemish on the back of it!

not a bad price that is about 150$ off the best price I have seen.... how many did they have???

i dont know, it was over a year ago

give them a call, using the phone is pretty simple once you get the hang out it! :flipoff2:

WARNING: The people that work there and answer the phones arent the sharpest tools in the shed! Its been over a year since i talked to them and it still stuck in my mind how brain damaging it was trying to get info out of them! :D

HAVE FUN!
