What is the best way to protect my frame from rusting? I am considering zero rust, but I don't think it will hold up to off road use? Is powder coating the best protection?

Thanks

There are lots of posts on this topic. Suggest a search in the archives, using a keyword like "POR 15". (They make a product to Paint Over Rust - POR - that many have used.) There are some other products, but are probably covered in the posts regarding POR 15.

yes i think powdercoat would be the best.its just so tough!

I went with POR-15 after some mild blasting, it adheres better to a slightly rusty surface. This stuff is very tough, though also a pain in the butt to paint. Powdercoating is very nice, but on a 4 wheel drive rig that gets scratches, I needed something I could touch up, as the frame will continually need a few touch ups every year.

Thanks guys. I have used POR 15 and it works great but it is a big PIA to apply correclty especially the inside of the rail will be too difficult to apply correctly. Has anyone used a 2 part epoxy?

Someone posted using Rust Bullet for their frame. I have used Rust Bullet for other projects, but not tried it on the frame so far. I can see it would be great to use for that application, however. Easier than POR 15, seems to get into the corners better, and I just painted over with POR's black top coat and have a great surface. So far, I've done a rear step, and pindle hitch with it.

Thanks IDave. It seems RustBullet needs to be applied over rust. Fortuneately there is much rust on this frame, so I don't know if it would adhere well to non rusted portions...I am starting to think Durabak may be the way to go...

i like my durabak, but i'm not sure if i'd go with it for the frame.

i did everything right for the application, but every once in a while there will be some hard contact on the bed of the cruiser and the durabak will scrape up a little. nothing bad, i just wouldn't want it hangin off my cruiser like that.

i'm tryin to go powdercoat on mine

I have applied Rust Bullet over both sandblasted and wire-brushed clean metal as well as over rust and it adheres perfectly well.

If you do go the POR15 route make sure you prep the metal correctly as they instruct first. Think allot of the complaints I've heard bout POR15 was bc of the prepping. Definately make sure you do a good job degreasing for any route you go. I POR15'ed my whole frame and many other parts... was very impressed with it....tuff as nails after 2 thin coats. But if i ever do another frameup I will proabably powercoat, but if you not talkin about taking down to the frame, that's probably outta the question.

Good luck with it!

I have used 2 part exoxy. On clean metal it will most likely out perform any 1 part coating (get data sheets). There are several places you can get professional 2 part epoxy urethanes. Go to an automotive refinish outlet and ask for light industrial or marine coatings. I know that PPG and Sherwin Williams (as well as others) make very durable products for around $100 per gallon.

Interestingly, I have a friend that owns an old Land Rover. The previous owner of his rig had applied a wax/oil mixture. This "home made" coating is pretty popular in England (very humid there). Same issues with getting to the inside of the frame. He has heard of the "toilet brush" applicator that works well. I can ask him how it's made if your interested. On that note - GM uses wax on their truck frames.

Just my opinion... good luck with your project...

Thanks Sparky_Mark. Eastwood sells the essentially the same wax mixture your friend uses http://www.eastwoodco.com/shopping/...Type=PRODUCT&RS=1&itemID=1117&keyword=16017ZP. I have planned on using it in addition to whatever other coating combination I decide. I am going to get an estimate on powder coating if , as I suspect, it is cost prohibitive I may use either the POR 15 or the Rustbullet topped with the 2 part epoxy (if possible), topped with the wax. I live near and ride on the beach hence my paranioa over rust prevention... :)

We just got a frame back from being blasted and powdercoated, that had to be the best $350 I've seen paid for someone else to do the work. Saved us many hours of prepping, painting, etc., and the finish was awesome. It made you a little self conscious about getting grease on it from the bushings. we are still thinking of "waxing" inside the frame rails as a preventitive measure.
