Hey guys,

I found this add in the classifieds. Do you all think this would be a good transplant package for my 78 Fj40? I do not currently have a engine, tranny or t case in fj currently. Does anybody know the screen name denisbut? Is he a member?

Thanks

FJ40 2f/trans/case combo in NC-$1000
After 4 years and 4 different Landcruisers I'm quiting. The parts I'm selling were intended to go into early FJ40 build-up but after 2 years "in progress" it's still no-go.
I parted out titleless '75 FJ40 and used all the body parts to restore another FJ40. For sale is the original 2F engine,4 speed transmission and transfer case combo out of that 1975 FJ40. This combo will work on all years of FJ40 and FJ55(though minor alternations need be done on earlier FJ40 models). The truck had 60K on odometer. The compression, original factory clutch with more than half of thickness on the clutch disc, condition of valve train and smothness of shifting support that.Engine is completely desmoged(has smog pump bracket for power steering upgrade).Engine is wired so it starts, runs and idles(well). No leaks anywhere around seals though a little grease is present on the bottom of oil pan(on outside). Transmission and transfer case shift smothly in all positions. The engine mounts included, speedo and e-brake cables are present and working. There is a good deal of superficial rust, esp. on oil pan.

Now,what I did for preparation to implant this engine combo into my future project:
-Engine was rinsed with fresh engine oil and Marvel Mystery oil mixture (and drained).Fresh 10w40 Castrol GTX oil charge and Toyota OEM oil filter
-Transmission and Transfer case were rinsed with Marvel Mystery oil and then added Coastal 80w90 gear oil to the level
-Engine block was rinsed with "copious" amount of running water and completely drained
-Cylinder head was removed for inspection, very mildly resurfaced/valves regrinded by professional shop and excelent mechanic($150-receipt included).Head did not need that but I did it for prophylaxis.Fel-Pro head gasket and factory type valve stem seals installed.Head torqued to specs.Compressions are all between 145-150 psi(engine cold,10w40 Castrol GTX)
-1979 FJ40 exhaust manifold upgrade(stock downpipe and its mount bracket included)
-New Nippon Denso spark plugs, new AutoLite wires
-New valve cover gaskets,exhaust manifold gaskets(by Fel-Pro)
-Toyota OEM non-USA carburator(no emission controls, vacuum advance port, over $800 from SOR)
-Complete FJ60 fully electronic ignition upgrade with vacuum advance, new button&rotor,FJ60 "dented" sidewall installed(over $100)
-New Toyota OEM water pump-$200 from dealer (not installed - the old one seem to be good and tight, though).New water hose junction connector- over $40 at dealer)

As I mentioned, engine starts and runs and can be tested for compression or oil pressure.Battery is not included(it came from my friend's boat).Overall,it's complete drop-in package. You will need couple gaskets for thermostat(I took it apart for inspection and cleaning) and water pump. I would also replace oil seas before instalation(since seals are only 35 years young).
I built a little frame on wheels to move the combo around garage. It's included and can be pulled/pushed on your flat bed trailer .I have winches/come-along but bring the ramps.Engine is prewired and has a regular ignition switch. So,it's safe turn key set-up for test runs. More pics available to those serious.

Sounds spot on for what you are looking for! Of course, it'd be nice if it was a cheaper deal on just engine.

hope so

Contacted the guy hopefully he will get back with me. It will be a fun drive to asheville. Of course it would be nice if it was cheaper.

He's a good, stand-up guy. Seems to know his stuff about FJ40s. Have traded parts with him before...wouldn't be concerned about him pulling a fast one on you.

Ping Recon1504 down here in GA. He has a running 1F + 3spped + transfer he's giving away...might be worth looking into. His number is on GA cruisers board.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. I picked up my 2f, tranny and tcase yesterday. I started right up and sounds great. Now I just need someone to install it.

Take it to Gary. They'll do a simple swap I'm pretty sure.

I will talk to gary this week. I wonder what it will cost me. Are there in Toyota or Landcruiser shops in the area? Raleigh? THanks

thanks

Jim,

thanks for the info. I'm going to have a local guy put the engine but will need lots of helping getting all the wiring done and extras done tons of :censor: fun

Adam, sorry we didnt cross paths at URE.

The wiring is pretty simple on these at least. read through my thread or better yet one of the really good 2f rebuild threads..... search "best 2f" for lots of info but pretty much all the issues are covered in the 40's tech area; dont forget the tech links too (or poser will promptly remind you :D )

you happen to have an extra plastic fan with 4 bolt attachment ? i believe a 6 blade

sorry

Yeah sorry we didn't get to meet. I had a great time!

I do not have an extra fan on the one on the engine im going to use. I wil keep my ears and eyes open. Im looking for a fan shroud if you know where one is.
