I'm heading out to Fort Fisher this weekend, it'll be my first time there and first time beach driving - any advice on either? I got a portable air compressor and a decent tire gauge so I'll be airing down to 15-20lbs.

That should have you covered. It can get a little bouncy in spots, but that’s part of the fun. Enjoy!

Low gear
Stay off the brakes.

What will you be driving? If automatic, 4Low, air down, dont make sudden starts, stops, or turns. Do you have maxtrax or equivalent? can be useful.
Of course, best advice is buy this book Amazon product ASIN 171815321X , its number one in Oprah's book club and has sand driving techniques, as the type of sand will matter

I'll be driving my automatic 97 lx450. I was thinking of picking up some maxtraxx knockoffs but I already busted the budget and with my engine refresh (head gasket, all radiator hoses, nearly all gaskets, new timing kit), unexpected need for new rear calipers, and paying my mechanic to install all of that...

Tire size? BroDozer (new word I learned from my kids last night) or regular? Either way, drop down to low 20s, 4Low, and the Second Gear start button will help also reduce wheel spin, so you don't dig hole and get stuck. I have use knock off max traxs, like this plenty, they work fine. But you will be okay without them and plenty of people there, watch out for yahoos that can't do yahoo crap at Carolina Beach anymore and moved to Fisher.

Still, that book above is number 3 on NYT best sellers, a wealth of knowledge.

Amazon product ASIN B00AV2HONS.

Buy the book.
I laughed
I cried
I wet myself.

SANCHEZ!!!!

Hope you had fun. I am out there often with my 98LX. Airing down and staying on the gas is the best bet. Fort Fisher is a hidden gem for NC.

Usually have a year pass and take the kids out there. I try to grab some longboardable surf, but usually just end up bodysurfing. I never air down, but I grew up driving a little Police Department Samurai and quads at Carolina Beach when I was Ocean Rescue.
