I need some help with my tractor. I have an OLD Ford tractor that was working fine until my father in law hooked up the battery charger backwards on the battery in an attempt to charge the battery without me knowing about it!

I need help:
1) ID'ing the tractor as far as model
2) Any ideas on getting this thing started again?

I bought a new battery, which is a 6 volt battery. Apparently these old tractors run off a 6v system. I hooked it up like it was before and nothing. When I push the start button I get nothing. Any ideas?

It does look like this system runs off a positive ground. The positive wire was run to the frame and the negative was run to what looks like the starter. It worked fine like this until he hooked it up wrong.

Well anyway, here are some pics and any help is appreciated.

What you have is a Ford 8N. The electrical system was originally a 6V positive ground system. Double check all the wiring that it is in tact. These tractors are prone to having all kinds of starting/wiring issues due to the somewhat unusual wiring system. There is a kit available through your Ford/New Holland Dealer that converts these things to a 12V positive ground system with an alternator that simplifies things a bit.

Ford 8N

I did the same damn thing to my Ford 8N - fried some wires. They are pretty easy to work on an a whole new wiring loom is not too expensive - Here's a great site to learn about your classic Ford 8N - You will also find a FORUM there.

Hey overton does your 8N only send power to the hydrolic lift for your shredder if the PTO is engaged? I can only lift my shredder if I have the blade spinning. Is this right?

Oh, and thanks for the link and info.

That is correct - The PTO must be engaged for the hydraulics to work. A little scarey but you get used to it. One of the drawbacks of the old 8N's

Well I've got the starter cranking now, just can't get it to start. I am going to get some starting fluid tomorrow and try that. This tractor has never really started very easy. Probably could use a tune up and new plugs, definately wouldn't hurt it!

Plugs could make all the differince in the world. The carb is easy to overhaul and kits are readily available if need be.

you may want to go to an 8 volt battery and adjust the VR to accomidate it, better cranking, hotter spark, just carry a spare coil, Larry

All you need to make these 6v's crank better are THICKER battery cables.I've got a "48 8N i use weekly.Great machines.
