The steering rack seems to be bad on one of my employee's Taurus. She has been quoted $5-600 to replace, I assume with a reman part. The PS fluid had been blowing out the top of the reservoir and is all foamy, like when you first burp a hydraulic system. I thought it was the pump, but a mechanic I trust says it is the rack.
Common with these pod-cars?
Price sound right?

Thanks,
Ed

Apparently fairly common, from what I've read. Craig helped me replace one on my son's girlfriend's Taurus. If the $5-600 is parts and labor, that's reasonable, cause you have to unbolt and lower the sub-frame to get the rack out. Rebuilt rack is about $175. Took Craig and I about 6 hours to swap, but neither of us had done one before.

Get new tie rod ends put in as well, cause they'll have them off and it shouldn't add any to the labor.

Thanks Bob. I figured this guy was shooting me straight.
