I did a search and didn't turn anything up. Just wondering if anyone had done this swap? Or has any thoughts about this motor in a 60? Would it match up to a h55f or a h42, adapter of course, but power band? Don't have a plan to build soon as my 2f has 98000 miles but want to learn because some day a diesel will happen.
thanks
Just from a quick search, I didn't know much about these engines, it seems to be very heavy, 860lbs. That would be my first concern for the swap. Heavy suspension and an axle upgrade would take care of that. I'm not sure of adapter availability, but you might be able to make something yourself or have it made. If you have the cash and the willpower, you can do just about anything.
I kind of like the idea of a ford diesel swap, International made some great engines. A turbo would probably make the 6.9 a lot of fun to drive.
Doesn't seem like it weight to much more than a 2f. And according to banks power wise way above. Banks Power | 83-93 Ford - 6.9 & 7.3L>>Sidewinder® Turbo System Let alone add a turbo and you are kicking some a$$. Anyone know how it compares in size to a chevy small block or would it be closer to a big block? Trans wise the zf5 or e40d seem to be stock options and a 4 speed manual (don't remember name) and 3 speed automatic (c-6). Just started looking into adapters so I will have to reply on that later.
I was under the impression that the 2f was in the 690lbs range, but I may very well be off on that weight.
As far as engine size, I believe it is closer in size to a big block. I have seen ford adapters around, but I never looked to see if any of them might work for a ford diesel. I love the turbo idea, I think a turbo 6.9 would be fantastic in a cruiser. Plenty of HP and lots of low end torque.
How's the mileage on you 6.9 in your pickup? I have heard that turbos can actually help your mileage if you're not to heavy on the throttle.
The zf5 seems to be a nice setup because of the low first gear ratio and the 24% overdrive. I looked at advanced adapters and didn't find anything for adapting the zf5 or e40d to a land cruiser transfer case. I thought I read somewhere that a dana 300 could be used with land cruiser applications, but I may be way off on that. There was an adapter for the dana 300 available from advanced.
If the transfer case becomes the big hurdle, an axle swap might be a good way to go. You would gain heavy duty axles front and rear to match the Ford drivetrain. Maybe dana 60 out of a truck or bronco axles. Just thionking off the top of my head.
Marks 4wd in Australia, makes adapter for Ford small block to the h42, I believe. Does the 6.9 share the same bolt pattern as the Ford small blocks? If they share a common bolt pattern, you may be in luck.
The lack of an overdrive on the h42 might not make the 6.9 much fun on the highway, if that matters to you. I think there are a few overdrive options that can be added to the h42 if you wanted to go that route.
I don't know about the 6.9 but I weighed a 7.3 PowerStroke which I would expect to be very similar to the 6.9 and it came in at 1,150 lbs including oil, alternator and flywheel but without turbo or starter.
i understand why you would consider swapping a diesel for a gas engine, but what i don't understand is why you would consider a V8 diesel. imho, the best engine design is an inline 6...smooth, balanced power. there is a reason why even big rig engines are straight sixes.
why not swap in a 12H-T, 1HZ or even a cummins? an international V8 diesel would be the last on my list of potential swap candidates. don't get me wrong...some people love them and swear by them. i'm just curious as to what would motivate such a swap? do you have one laying around?
Irish I have been drawing a blank on adapters too. I must be missing something there must be another engine that it shares a bolt pattern with. But I haven't found it yet. Looks like the trucks came with either a dana 44hd or a dana 50 up front and a sterling 10.25 in the rear. Lots of different gear ratios 3.55 up to 4.10 stock.
slammed41 I saw that some of the Aussies are putting in 6.2 so maybe the 6.9 would be something worth looking into. I don't have a 6.9 laying around but just wanted some education and opinions about something easier to find that a toyota diesel or cummins 4bt.
Dieselenginetrader.com , i use this site to find motors for our drilling equip all the time. As you will see if you explore that site is that the 4bt is not as rare as some may say and can be had at a resonable price as a rebuilt or core.
I 'd like to see some more unique swaps, and i think the international 6.9/7.3 series could be a fun high power option with the right turbo set up.
But, in all honesty I personally think the Cummins 6bt is probably the best choice for a high power diesel swap. It's reliable, common and can make lots of power. Spring over or 4+ inches of suspension lift and axle mods gets you a diesel monster.
If you're willing to wait for guys to work out the kinks, there's a great thread going on about the Isuzu 4eh1, or something like that. It makes good power and has plenty of parts availability. Isuzu diesels are supposed to be super reliable and came in all sorts of box trucks all over the world.
