I'm going to have a set of 285/75/16s installed on my hundy next week.

Questions:

Do most of you get a 5th (spare) in the same size?

I understand a 285 fits in the stock spare location. Can anyone confirm this for me?

Finally, I'm nowhere near organized or dilligent enough to rotate a spare through on tire rotations. So, I'd prefer to not pay the extra $ and just keep the 275 underneath for emergencies. Does anyone see an issue with that plan?

Thanks in advance!
Eric

285 fits under.
Do not run an off size tire. After you get a flat you won't be excited about a blown diff.
If you don't want to put it in rotation then don't worry about it.

Just give this diagram to the tire monkeys. Option "G" Rearward Cross

So are you guys running factory alloys for a spare? Or rocking the stock steelie? I'd like to implement the 5 tire rotation, as I'm due for another set of tires. But I'd rather not roll on steelies.

Not sure what year it changed (2003?) but I have a matching full-size spare wheel. If I didn't I would have bought one anyways.

Mine came with 5 alloys.

It doesn't save money. But, if you're not going to rotate the spare in, and are worried about departure angles, you could run a 255/85/16 sized spare tire. It's diameter is close enough to a 285/75/16 (True 33" vs 32.something) to not run into the mismatched tire size related diff problem.

Your 5th is a steelie? That's a first, in fact I doubt it was that way from the factory...

If you change the factory tire size then buy 5 total tires. I know it's a couple hundred more dollars but the repair bill for running varying size tires will be larger...

P.S. I never rotated my spare, but should have...

I bought five 285s and never rotated the spare. But now I need new tires (~65K miles) and I only have to buy three!!!

BTW, the spare fits, but it'll probably make it a bit of a challenge to hook up your safety chains if you are towing a trailer. I overcame this by adding a stainless steel shackle on the side that was tight.

I have 285x65x18.......I bought the 5th tire for spare...always do on all tires. I hate if I dont and decide to change sizes or brands and then have an off tire I cant sell without losing my tail.

I also do a tire rotation of all 5 tires every 4000 miles....reverse cross pattern (Spare to RR, RR to RF, RF to LR, LR to RF, RF to Spare). My Nitto Trail Grapplers were bought 30 days after getting my hundy two years ago...I still have half tread after nearly 30,000 miles. It makes that big of a difference in mileage they last.....

They also fit under in the stock storage area...I would push to rear of storage area to get a little more room for hitch...and never a problem.
