I had about 14 freeway miles to contemplate one of these today. It's the first one I've really seen, and my first impression was "not bad".

From behind it has more ground clearence than I would have thought, they did a good job cleaning that up. No real dangly bits or low shock mounts to hang you up. Contrast that with a domestic SUV next time on the freeway. Well done Toyota.

From the front it does look cool. It's instantly recognizable as having FJ40 stlying cues-even the side marker lights are in the right position relative to the headlights. I liked that.

Side view was not as good. The belt line is too high, and that c-pillar is really wide. I would opt for bigger windows, and a thinner pillar. The "fenders" for the front are too thin in profile, but still a nice homage to an FJ40 in their shape.

The white roof is awesome. Recognizable as a Land Cruiser styled Toyota product from half a mile a way.

The roof rack actually looks more than cosmetic-is that true? It looked like big, well supported bars. Not the crappy and useless rack put on the 80 series.

Rear tail light--What can I say-Toyota will be selling tons of these lenses. If you go off road, you may as well buy a set now, you're going to break them off where they stick out in the back.

Bumpers-Typical Toyota-not suitable for anything. They look weak and low, but an ARB will solve the front perfectly. If I owned one, that would be the first mod. The trailer hitch was integrated nicely.

Overhangs-I think this is going to make a decent offroader. The overhangs are not bad, at least when you are used to driving a Wagon. A bit of lift, a bit of tire, an most of Moab will be within reach.

Overall, I liked it. It has lots of potential. It will be interesting to see what Toyota does with the styling, and what the aftermarket does with the obvious weak points.

on a side note.. That bling skid plate. It'd sure not take any hits. but It'll keep the mud out of the engine skid plate.

I had to remove my engine skid plate to remove about 10 lbs of mu .. It'll probably save you some time.

Everybody should remember that this is a 1st year model and as we know, it will evolutionaze as the model years change. The more feedback people give the more they might make those changes. I wouldn't be surprised if a ragtop is in the works and the looks of the bodystyle might get nicer looking with bigger windows and less of a C pillar. Look at the changes in the 4runner and cruiser over the years.
