There are quite a few writeups on installing retractable side mirrors to an FZJ, but most address the mechanics and nothing completes the install or the wiring circuitry, so it made sense for me to document and post this. @mot & @S.CarolinaFZJ80 come in with the most useful info in THIS THREAD. I'm simply picking up where they leave off with the wiring section of the job. I think some of the mechanical issues they ran into are more than achievable with 3D printing or all of the ways MOT listed towards the end of the thread in post #43. Everything is solvable for.. Maybe I will even get the 3D printed bases made!
I'm going to write this up as I am performing which is a RHD to LHD wiring swap/merge from a RHD donor to a LHD chassis, so depending upon if you're RHD or LHD, pay attention if you need to reverse the sides from what I am doing. I'll use driver and passenger side as much as possible when it correctly refers to the drive position. This is just the beginnings , and I'll explain everything over the coming days with extensive pictures. I'm swapping from a 92 RHD folding to 94 LHD non-folding. It would be easiest swapping from like electrical systems, and as far as i can tell 91-92, 93-95, 96-97. But I could be off on 93... The only difference I ran into was the passenger lock switch on the 94 vs not on the 92. You'll end up one terminal short if using the stock connectors for the extra wires. I parlayed this into adding defrost wires for the side mirrors [added extra stock connectors for the 3 wires] and will probably address that in another thread if you want that to also look factory as I am doing.
If you do not have folding mirrors, but plan to add them, you will definitely need the following parts:
- Mirror Relay box 87989-60010 [to install in passenger door]
- power folding side mirrors *
- power mirror switch w/retract button [unsure of PN]
*Mechanical differences alluded to earlier [mirror base differences RHD to LHD] - view the above thread for specifics.
If you want to make things super easy or want it to look factory, which is sort of bi-product of having the following, it is ideal to also have the following:
- both door wiring harnesses from vehicle that has folding mirrors
- Dash wiring harness from same vehicle (or just the following 6 wires from said harness, uncut, unpinned from terminals):
Ideal tools to have, at least that I used:
- terminal pin removal tool set (amazon like $25)
- small screwdriver set and pick tool set from harbor freight
- assorted heat shrink set from harbor freight
- IWISS Crimper HERE.
- small gauge butt connectors HERE.
More to come..
