I have a V8 conversion in my 60. I installed a Potimeter in order to use my stock Toyota Tachometer with the V8. This worked great for about 2 years. Suddenly my tach would stop working or bounce all over the place and not keep a constant reading. Or if I hit a bump, the tach needle would bounce. Other times it works great. I figured it was the potimeter that was not working and replaced it. It did not help; the tach is still floppy.

Is this an indication of a tachometer gone bad? Would the potimeter cause the tach stress over time? (The vehicle has about 230,000 miles on it.)

Thanks for any help!

I dont know if this helps but I know that the gas gauge can spike all of a sudden and then go back down to where it needs to be and that is because of the contacts being dirty. You might want to try cleaning the contacts. Just my 02 cents.

Maybe some one else will chime in that has more knowledge about this.
