Toilets

I spoke with Sheila about this. They are planning to have pit toilets installed in the lower campground area before the event next fall.

In absence of this happening, we need more toilets (3 additional + 3 in place) if having them serviced on a Friday or Saturday is not an option.

BBQ

While the food has been decent at the BBQ, Mike and Peggy Sears have expressed an interest in handling this themselves. I think that would be a good way to cut costs. They'll need help in the very least.

As an option, I thought the potluck went very well. Any thoughts about something more along those lines?

I'd like to see our FN '08 committee chairperson appointed now. Granted there won't be much to do 'til June but to get it started now, taking notes, making plans, getting folks assigned to various groups and such.

The main thing to do now is to set the date, publish the date and hope we don't end up with two other events on the same dang weekend. I think that hurt us a bit this year.

There has also been comments about not having a FN event next year but to alternate years with Tall Corn. Another thought would be to have it the first of June, after school is out.

Agreed on all points.

I mentioned to several out-of-towners the conflicts with other events. The consensus seemed to be that we had 43 rigs which is a very respectable turnout, regardless of the conflicts.

If we are going to continue this as an annual event, we'll need to make a better effort at club participation, both with working the event and with attending.

June usually conflicts with Razor Ramble and telico. Both are close events and will draw away people. I would love to see it later in october so the leaves would change and the weather would be more enjoyable. Great event.

Last year's event was a week later and a few folks complained about it being cold at night (in the lower 40s). Average temps for the last 2 weeks of Sept are 50s at nite and upper 70s daytime. Problem is, here in the midwest, there's only about 2 days a year when it's average :D.

We had a cold snap during last year's event and a near record heat wave this year, so I don't know that moving the event date 1-2 weeks either way will help much. Personally, I can take the colder weather better than hotter, but I know that's not the case for everyone.

Gary should try and help more. I did not do very well on raffle prizes and did not work registration and packed food on my way out of town and thusly did not contribute to the pot luck (sorry).

I had a blast running the trails, the weather was fine both years, and the toliets stunk.

I think 40+ rigs with $3.00 gas is very good.

Any ealier and (for me) the event will conflicy with irrigation, any later it will hit harvest.

Personally I would like to see it later in the fall…October would be good. The heat killed it for me this year.

If we are going to continue this as an annual event, we'll need to make a better effort at club participation, both with working the event and with attending.

The first part of this sort of falls on my shoulders. Silly me…thinking a schedule would get people where they need to be. I wasn’t able to get there until after everything started and by then the regulars had taken over…I’ll follow up on this later.

I’m still wondering about the second part…

I thought the food was good. We over estimated the attendance. The pot luck worked well for our group but I don’t think it would work to coordinate with everyone. Mike and Peggy did an excellent job on every other meal so having them take over the BBQ would be a treat.

The other thing to mention is that having the raffle in the afternoon went well.

This was my first TLCA event, so I don't have anything really to compare it to.

Overall I thought it was a great event. So a BIG thanks to all those that put time to this wonderful event :beer:

And by no means is my opinion being influenced by me winning a new ARB FRIDGE

Some general observations are as follows:

It sure seems like it made more sense to have the registartion down at the campsite, to make it more convienient for the volunteers. So lets make sure we continue to do that.

A printed itinerary of scheduled events should be sent to all registered participants prior to the event. This could show registration times, tech inspection times, trail ride times, and raffle times.

After visiting with Mike and Peggy I agree they should lead the pot luck efforts but as we discussed we should follow the Boy Scout method of having a cooking crew and cleaning crew designated so that the work gets spread around.

I also agree Gary needs to do more, he had way to much time on his hands to encourage me to get on the hard trails. If this continues it will only cost me more money in repiars and upgrades ;)

Being in the communication business, one thing that concerns me (especially after the labor day accident) is the limited communication at the park. When I left on Sun, the landline phone at the office was not working. I don't know if Ron & Sheila have any other method of emergency communication or not. I'm not aware of anyone that was able to get cell coverage without going up a mile or so up the highway.

Unless Ron has a backup plan, I would suggest we consider renting one or more sat phones next year to have in case of emergency. Another possibility would be using HAM radio, if there is a local repeater with a phone patch available.

Buddy, we have only begun to explore the limits of your truck. I kind of felt it was important to make sure everyone focused on the most important part of the event: ITS ALL ABOUT THE WHEELIN'

Next year, or at DSR you need to go after the big rocks!

:)

School?

I am not completely sure about dates. I think Bob is correct that unless you go more than one or two weeks either way, you are going to be rolling the dice on temps.

We have to start considering school. I know many of you might not see it as a big deal, but taking your children out of school may not be an option. The idea of driving all night Friday or leaving early Saturday may not be worth it to people with kids. I really think that you need to consider how that may change attendance. Not all spouses are cool with the other one being gone all weekend and being stuck with the kids...PS...Thanks Mandy

I am not saying the dates are bad, it just seemed that in the discussions of attendance, no one really felt that school might have been part of the problem. I think that 40+ rigs is excellent!

well I didn't make it nor did I make it to the event last year.....but I think as a college student this years dates would have worked out had I wanted to go. I live about 45 minutes from FN and could have driven down in the afternoons had I not had to work and then camped the weekend. I think this is what Brian(4runny) did.

I am glad you all had fun maybe I can make it next year.

As far as dates I think it's great. As those of you in the midwest know there's really only 2 short times per year that are weather friendly.

Some really cool organized events for kids might encourage more families to attend. Specifically I wouldn't know what to suggest. Maybe have Mike C dress up as Barney or something. :D

Might collaborate with GCC and the Razorbacks to get those members to show.

No complaints, had a great time.

As you all know we couldn't make it this year because of the new house. But here is a few cents.

In response to Chris' thought of alternating years and collabortating with Tall Corn, it may not be a bad idea. Even though northern MN is a drive we might consider talking/working with the MN Toyx4s to work with their event if the club chooses to alternate years or ??

All of the ideas mentioned are certainly worth discussing in more detail, especially the communication issue.

I had a blast and have attended both years of this event. I love the cold over the heat. Big fires and sleeping bags beat Dew and sweat any day. We brought 3 trucks last year and 5 people last year and 5 truck and 10 people this year. Fairly sure we will get it to 8 or 9 rigs next year. IF you alternate with Tall corn we proably wont go. Nothing againts them but Razorback and this are the only close events all year. If you run in June we cant make both either. Spring and fall are great. Once we start adding in longer trips then places like Lonestar, Moab, Telico, and Black hills or higher on our agenda than Iowa. Nothing againts Iowa, its just the others have tradition and if I am going far away I would like to Mark off some of these on my list.

Let me restate that this was a wonderful event. I feel like 40 rigs is nothing to be ashamed of. We were not able to begin to meet all of the folks there. I didnt even realize MoJ was there. You came down and hung with us last year. Sorry we didnt hook up this year.

I though more folks from GCC were coming but things happen.
