When starting I noticed the maintenance light flashes about five times - this cannot be a sign of a good thing. Checked the manual and MUD but cannot find anything - any ideas?

Yup, oil change time. Your dealership sets it for you. It starts off flashing, then after a few weeks it stays on.
When you go in to get your next oil change, be sure to tell them to schedule the next service at 5k and not 3k.
