I have the 3rd row of seats removed in my 80 (thinking about doing the 2nd) and I was thinking about removing all the carpeting and insulation in the rear and using some spray on bed liner in the back to make the cargo area more utilitarian.

What do you guys think?

Also thinking about removing the plastic interior panels in the rear and building some racks or mounting points for stuff n things.

All been done before. If it's what you want and makes your rig better for how you use it then I say go for it.

The biggest reported problem, and I would suggest doing a search, is the heat that will come from the engine/tranny tunnel. The carpet absorbs sound and more importantly, reflects heat. Read up on it, but I would suggest painting the floor with Lizard Skin (or a latex paint mixed with ceramic beads, do an internet search on this too).

No, i think ill leave the carpet and insulation up front (maybe even replace it). But in the rear of vehicle i'll put the liner, so it's kinda like a small 5-6 foot truck bed

I think the interior will be much louder if you remove the carpeting and interior panels. I drove around for a long time with my rear PS cargo interior panel removed, and the road noise from the rear right tire was very noticeable. What do you want to haul around?

Yes. The search function will help you find the threads by searching Bedliner or various product names, dynamat, soundproofing etc Also talk to the manufacture for recommendations.

Just a recent post about using dynamat and then covering with second skin product which is ceramic and has hear and sound absorptive qualities.

I do agree with it being a bit loud without the carpet and interior plastic panels ... But that is without any sound deadener

It's gonna smell pretty rank... for quite a while. I did monstaliner inside and out in my heep CJ and even with 99 air leaks and a softtop, the smell took the better part of 6 months to dissipate.

2nd that... I bedlined mine from the front seats back and the smell of the bed-liner lasted for a looooong time.. I ended up putting the carpeting back in.. for the road noise especially fron the back tires...

Off gassing of the product. It takes time for that smell to go away. You would have a bed liner smell with lilacs.
