So I've been searching for information on FJ70's here in the US. Its byfar my favorite FJ and would love to look for one for a project truck. Everywhere I read it says that very few were made in the US/north America and its near impossible to find one thats lefthand drive. Any information available on the number made? Or what other countries use left hand drive that would have a thicker supply of FJ70's? Ever time I look at it it screams "Toyotas Samurai". Just wondering because if they are that rare I'll grab one if i ever see it.

Ah was looking for something like that but couldnt manage to type the right search words in.

Youve got a chance finding an BJ70, but Id say you have zero chance finding an FJ70. Goodness, why would you want an FJ when you can get a BJ?:grinpimp:

Diesel's forever!

Well in the 84-90 models they have the most HP,torque and the fastest highway speed;)
Factory unsmogged in a 70 series body whih is lighter than a 60 series by 500lbs or more they really kick ass:D

A stock FJ70 is *way* more drivable than a stock BJ70. Same drivetrain as an FJ62, but much lighter. I used to love mine and really regret blowing my importation slot on an FJ62 rather than buying a new FZJ70 and bringing that over....

I know of two FJ70's in the US, one from Venezuela, one from Malaysia. A good friend of mine drives the latter, it was imported under the new-defunct military service implortation clause. He should be at the LSLC Roundup this weekend!

Many 71 series available

Hi Exiled, in the Middle East specially in Saudi Arabia, the FZJ71 is all over, they are left hand drive, you can have them with the 4500EFI petrol inline 6, or the 4200 Diesel.

They are also available in KUWAIT, United Arab Emarits, Oman, Yemen & Qatar, all left hand drive. But I recomend SAUDI ARABIA for you they are every were you look.

So you can buy one and try to ship it to your country if it is allowed.

I hope I answered your question, if you have further questions do not hesitate to ask.;)

 cross continent shipping and importing not an option for a seventeen y/o highschool student...

You two choices "r0nin89"

First choice : get someone to order it for you "if the money is available"

Second Chice : is to save your money and wait until it is ok for you to order it, you are young and you have all the time ahead to get one.:)

Have a nice day;)

I will try to post some interior photos soon, anyway it is 100% the same interior as the 2006 model.

Container Cost from KSA

Just 4 the records, a 40 foot container from Dammam Saudi to Toronto Canada is US$4800.00 and a 20 footer is +/- $3000.00

It could be significantly cheaper to Houston or other USA port??

Shipping a pickup from Saudi may not be possible??? as foreigners are not allowed to own them (and I think you have to be the owner to export??)

The 70 pickups are real popular with the deep desert dwelling Bedoins - with a huge gas tank and water tank in the box.
- still lots of 40's on the job too.

Idk I'd like to find that out. $3000 for the shipping isnt too bad. Guess your looking at $10000 when all is said and done. Thats asuming $4000 for the truck, $3000 for the containor, $2000 import fees, and $1000 for the red tape registration that probably comes with it. Definatly will happen when I get out of college. That is if there is still gas left in the world :D

I am not sure I would agree that an FJ70 is more drivable than a BJ70 are you speaking about diesel verses gas or specifically 3B verses 1FZ engine, because I can tell you that I have rebuilt both in my shop and they are very close in weight to each other. maybe your experience was with some specific 70's you have compared? I have driven the newer FZJ70's (Saudi) and HZJ70's as well as the countless BJ7x series I have and the only difference I see is quickness of gas of diesel.

Cheers,

Michael

If you like the 70 series body style they are available and running around in the sates mainly the ones from Canada and they are BJ70 series. If you like the gas engine in 70 series chassis your best bet is what has already been mentioned get a BJ70 and put a 1FZ in it (there are plenty of 1FZ engines and ECU's available out there).

As far as importing a FZJ71 from Saudi it would not be possible via normal channels because the 1FZ engines are carbureted and will not pass the Fed emissions to be brought into USA. That is speaking from experience not just guessing here.

I can tell you that there are FZJ7x here and some are from Saudi and they are titled and licensed, how they got here is not something I know and I would leave it as a mystery.

Cheers,

Michael

If I was to import one it would be a total custom job and probably opt for a built 3.4 or 22re turbo. The motor isnt my main concern. Its the awsome body design and solid axle awsomeness. To come from mini trucks its a real privilage to find a solid axle yota in my area.

If you are going to go with a custom job and stick with Gas, don't waste your time with 3.4 or 22re go right to 1FZ with a TRD SC that will give you a tick over 300hp and plenty of torque as well. Here a pic of one I pulled and swap on one of my 80's (the only cruiser I have left that is still a gasser).

Michael

Forget about 100% legal importation of a post-1987 70 series into the US, regardless of drive-train, because the vehicle doesn't meet DOT safety requirements. Period.

Quasi-legal, "gray market" importations can and do happen all the time, there are many loopholes at the state level and a couple still available at the Federal level that people take advantage of (not advocating this in any way). Methods vary from "close-to-legal" to "extremely shady", or infinite shades of gray (market). If you're doing this for a one-time importation and know you'll keep the vehicle forever, it's actually not too difficult (depending on the state you're located in), but you have to learn to live with two realities:

1. If you ever get caught (even if you likely won't), you could be in a heap of trouble, or at the very least, lose the vehicle and pay a hefty fine.
2. Because of the shady importation, the later sale of the vehicle will be extremely difficult, so the overall value of the truck will always be questionable.

If you're cool with both of these points, *DO YOUR HOMEWORK*, there are methods available. And if you decide to go this route, be corteous and don't ping those who have gone before you, most people don't like to talk about it unless they know you well and trust you.
