im redoing the trailer wiring that was previously set up by the PO. he used side to side stab connectors and i want to solder it well to have the best connection. a couple questions i have are as follows. i'm doing a seven wire connector as i want to have power, back up lights and trailer brakes.

is the trucks wiring harness up to the job of the extra draw a trailer system would put in it or should i use relays? i think it likely is but thought i should ask. (just for the standard 4 wires. ill build the rest of the harness to the other 3 wires later)

for the standard 4 wires (brake/tail, right signal, left signal and ground) can i just splice into the trucks harness? being as they all have different bulbs and circuits i shouldn't need a brake converter box that is needed for those with tail/signal coming off the same bulb/circuit right?

cheers

For a four wire setup I would use kit that has it's own fuse. Believe U haul sells them as well as Amazon. Besides not adding a load to the factory wiring if there is a issue with the trailer wiring you don't blow a fuse or possible damage the factory wiring.

good call on fuses and protecting the wiring in the truck. i talked to a shop that sets up a lot of trucks with accessories etc and ill pick the parts tonight after work. ill have to modify it a little for my harness i built and ill have to add my own accessory wires with in line fuses to go from 4 to 7 pin connector but that'll be easy

this is the harness i built to allow ease of disconnecting should i need to do maintanence. i used the waterfproof delphi connectors.

i wired up the rest of the harness so i though last night. i did get a module with circuit protection. i pulled the old stuff all out. it was all side to side connectors and all sorts of wires spliced together so i figured i'd start new. well my lights don't work at all on the trailer now. there is a desperate power wire i was told i don't need but i'm going to hook it up and see because i'm sure everything else is right. at least the wiring is neater and it's a newer system so it should work well. i soldered everything as well for better connection.

hooked up the single power wire and it all works flawlessly. i had a spare power wire in the rear panel that had been used for an extra power outlet. i haven't used it again yet after i put new storage panels in. hooked it up out in a new fuse and it's all good to go.

I purchased a kit that I thought would plug directly into my FJ62 lights with no splicing. Seemed very simple, except that only the left blinker seems to send current to the plug and it makes both tail lights blink on the trailer. Did I just get the wrong kit? How did u tie into your lights?

The right turn signal wire is not in the harness going to the the left tail light. The timing blinking in the tail lights could be from a poor ground or voltage drop with the turn signal. There is only one wire feeding the two tail lights. I redid my trailer light wiring in my FJ62. Used one of those kits that supplies power to the trailer separate from the vehicle's power. To do a direct plug would require a second plug for the right side. I would like to do something like to clean up the wiring where it tapped into the factory with those crimp on connectors. I avoid cutting factory wiring if at all possible.

I just looked on Amazon and my 89 FJ62 is a saved vehicle. Says it does not Fit my Vehicle. Doubt there is a direct plug in for the 60/62 series.

Thanks for the reply. This kit actually splits and has plugs for both sides. I just didn't get a good pic of the whole kit. That's why I thought/hoped it would be so simple. I ordered for a 90 Toyota Pickup. I did notice that while the kit plug (pictured) had 6 blades, the truck only has 5. I'm wondering if there may be some defect in the part i purchased.

Success! After a few failed attempts with the plug-n-play kit I decided to tap in to the wiring directly. Was able to get left and right from the driver side panel. I didn't want to be cutting wires, but what I really didn't want was to pay someone to do it for me.
