This past week, I took the radiator out of my FJ62 to and took it to a radiator shop to have cleaned. In the meantime i replaced the thermostat with one from NAPA which he said was a 192 degree one. Today I put it all back in and hooked everything up. I did burp it a little but could only do it for about a minute at a time- the fluid would quit putting out bubbles and would just plain overflow. After doing this a couple of times I decided to just go ahead and drive it around. It now runs at the 2/3 mark, whereas before it ran at 1/3. What's the deal?

P.S. I was looking at another thread on overheating and someone had had their fan on backwards so it wasn't blowing air onto the rad and it was making the engine run hot...I'll post a pic showing my fan and which way it's rotating...I think I may have it on backwards too. :crybaby:

thanks for listening for the "shpeal", hope you can help

on a 60 you can't get the fan on backwards, it just can't be done......well I supose it could if you worked at it real hard.

turn both heaters on full, park the nose of the 60 up higher then the rear hoses on the firewall(or as high as you can) leave the cap off and run it......sometimes bump up the RPMS.

Are you SURE its overheating? or is the gauge or sender buggered up?

does the fan fit flush over the fan clutch?

can't remember which way it goes, too tired to go look.

You can't really have the fan on backwards. If you had it the wrong way around then the blades would still face at the same angle!! If you had it spinning the wrong way it would mean that a belt is installed the wrong way, and that is unlikely. In your photo that is correct.

When my 12H-T turbo diesel overheated it was because there was a heap of gunk inside the water jackets of the engine. It took 6 flushes of the engine to get it clean. I would be trying that for sure with your engine. Also do as Landpimp suggested and get your temp tested just in case it's your guage/sender.

In your photo the blades look a little odd. Are there pieces peeling of it?
Also, you might need to check that your thermatic clutch (?) is working (fan bolts to it). If it's not locking up correctly it could cause overheating.

Replace your fan clutch. I went through all of the same symptoms as you, and changed the same things out. Burping made a big difference. I raised the front of mine as high as the floor jack would lift it, then ran it for an hour. Ran cooler than before but still at about 2/3rds. I replaced the fan clutch, and now it never gets above 1/3rd in traffic, AC on, in 97 degree heat.

If your fan clutch is bad It'll overheat at lower speeds if its your capacity (flow problems like crap in the water jackets it would be more likely to heat up at higher speeds like over 60mph)

If the sender goes dry for a while it'll malfunction and give you bad readings.

Do what pimp says and get the nose up to burp it.

tomorrow I'll do some serious burping, and I hope that helps. I'm pretty sure my fan clutch is bad cuz I never hear it engage and I drive 24/7 with the windows down. Also, it's easy to move when the engine is at operating temp. So i guess if burping doesn't work I'll have that looked at. thanks a lot

Don't be tempted by the low price of aftermarket fan clutches. Bow down to Mr. Toyoda and unload your wallet, the aftermarket ones are crap. This is a Toyota only item imho. I've installed as many as 5 in a row aftermarket...don't go there!

What do you consider 2/3? There are three marks on the gauge, cold, 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, hot. Which one are you showing? When i replaced my thermostat, my gauge whent up a little because there are two different temp thermostats, 180 & 192 degree, so my gauge went from 1/4 to almost 1/2.

So what does that leave - the water pump? It's not real hard to change. Make sure you've flushed the system real good before you go that far. Water pumps usually leak before they fail.

Had an old friend whose father used Dran-O 50 yrs ago to flush out his cooling systems. Also limbered up the hoses.

the water pump was recently replaced so that can't be it. I was looking at the Radiator cap and the spring doesn't seem to have much "travel" at all, so I think I'll replace that and then look into the fan clutch. I'm in the process of burping right now

Your fan looks ok to me. Its supposed to draw the air in from the front.
Did you remember the upper gasket in the thermostat?
