Hey all,
Newb on here, first post but have been reading up for over a year. I am now on my 2nd FJ62 (with a 20 year gap between ownership). I purchased my current LC last year and have been making improvements ever since. This forum has been a great resource over the last year while I tinker away at different projects ranging from starter replacement, charcoal canister and other engine parts to replacing sway bar bushings.
The one thing that has always bothered me, since the day I bought it, is the fact that my FJ62 turns better to the left than to the right. I can get almost two complete turns of the wheel to the left, while only getting 1.5 turns to the right. I have found several posts on here with similar issues, but non have a conclusive resolve. I'm wondering if anyone on here has that answer as to why?
I would greatly appreciate any pointers and please keep in mind that I'm not a mechanic and the lingo may go over my head so "How to work on cars for DUMMIES" would be the correct way to answer my question. ;)

There should be a mark on the pitman arm and a mark on the steering box sector shaft to make sure the arm is aligned to the steering box. If they are NOT aligned thats your problem right there... youll need to remove the pittman arm, center the sector shaft, and align the marks on the sector shaft with the pittman arm. They will be like parallel to the frame

Here is what the lines look like

If they are aligned, do this:

Try turning the wheel as far as it will go to the left, then count the amount of turns it takes to turn all the way to the right. Then turn left the wheel left 1/2 the amount of turns you counted. Dont pay attention to the orientation of the steering wheel.

Once you have your steering wheel centered, remove your horn fuse and pop off the center cover on the steering wheel. Loosen the 19mm bolt in the center until its like halfway off and hold the steering wheel at 12 and 6 and rock it back and forth with some force to disloge it. Once its loose take the nut off and the wheel off and center it. Tighten the nut on there and then verify it takes equal amounts of turns to go left and right before putting the truck on the ground. Leave the center cap and horn fuse off still. It helps to have the front wheels off the ground for this.

Go for a drive and see where the steering wheel wants to be on flat road, if its slightly to the left, loosen the center nut and turn it one spline to the right. Fine tune it to where you want it and then finally pop your center cover back on, then reinstall your horn fuse.

dbbowen,
I really appreciate this!! I can tell this is something I'm going to have to farm out to my mechanic and with this information I hope to have the issue taken care of.
Thank you!!
