My 88 fj62 (240K), bone stock, is having a problem which my fiance is greeting with much annoyance. When it is cold, it fires right up, and then stalls right out. Once it is warm, everything seems OK. Have changed out the fuel and air filter. The pressure regulator and fuel pump are relatively knew. Any ideas? PCV? Cold Start Injector? Furthermore, how difficult are the PCV and Cold Start Injector to change out and how long would it take? I am leaving town tomorrow morning in my fiance's car and leaving her the 62. Any quick fix ideas. I have a parts car to cull from.

The cold start is very easy to access and should be swapable in just minutes. Have you checked it for proper impedance (I don't know the value)?

I have to claim ignorance on this and admit I have no idea what impedance you speak of? What should I check for the proper impedance? Also, when you say that the cold start is swappable in minutes, how many minutes do you really mean? I have an FSM and I will consult it ASAP, but would like to know what else will need to be moved to get to the cold start. Any special tools needed?
thanks so much, colin

Impedance is the electrical resistance offered by the injector when measured across the two terminals of it's electrical connector. It is a quick test to identify a burned out injector, but does not really identify a good injector as it could still have something else wrong. And by minutes I mean I could have it swapped in under 15 minutes as it is 100% accessable and only has handfull fasteners to deal with.

And the FSM will have the correct impedance value for that injector.

Thanks, importsilvia. I changed out/in the cold injector in pert-near the 15 minutes you predicted. Unfortunately, this did not do the trick. The truck is still stalling quickly after firing. Furthermore, the problem appears to be worsening as, even after the truck is warm, it will occasionally stall, especially when going into reverse. Any more ideas?

Something to check is the rear harness ground dead center under the very back of the body. Mine became so rusted that it was unable to support both the fuel pump and the reverse or brake lights. I fixed mine by rebuilding, rerouting, modifying the harness, and adding a new internal grounding lug, but you could most likely fix it with some wire brush time

I would also check the coil/ignitor--and since you have a parts truck handy, maybe just clean up the connections and/or swap them to see if it helps. Not common, but I do know one 62 owner who had a similar problem that turned out to be caused by this...
