My 1988 FJ62 is running great except when I go above 2,500 RPM. I get some really loud valve trane noise. This happens when the transmission kicks down and the RPM's go above 2,500. It also happens going down hill when in a lower gear and give it some gas.
Any thoughts would be most appreciative.

I have now been told that it may be low pressure from my oil pump. Has anyone heard of or seen this before? Better to ask before I spend the $260 for a new oil pump.
Thanks!

I would get some more ideas on that before replacing the oil pump. Pop the valve cover and do some cleaning. Mine was all crudded up with old oil debris. It could be the small oil holes in the assembly are partially blocked. That is not an area that gets a high volume of oil in the first place.
Looking for excess wear or slop in the asembly is where I would start.

Try a mechanical guage first, see what your pressure really is.

I like the idea of a mechanical gauge to see what the pressure really is for the engine. The stock gauge at idle is just above the lowest setting and at cruising speed is just above the 1/4.

I did adjust the valves, twice to make sure. The clatter happens just above 2,000 RPM still. The valve cover and top of the engine was really clean, not chucks of crud anywhere. I did clean the top of the valve cover but that was all I found.

Check your timimg. Also, are you 100% sure it is valve noise. My 62 will make a noise (more of a squeal) when my belt(s) begin to loosen. At those same RPM ranges and kick down conditions. It's it's way of telling me to tighten up the belts.

Every engine has a story and this is my story.
After an hour of extracating the oil pan from the engine. I guess the oil pan gasket was too much for the PO so they used 4lbs of silicone.
As I inspected the oil pan I noticed the bottom of the pan had the imprint of the oil pump screen. "Odd" I said as I pulled the silicone from my teeth. Upon close inspection I could see the pan took a good hit and jammed the pan into the oil pump.
This caused the low volume and as I checked out the rotating assembly I found #2 was loose.
So I put in the next size bearing in buttoned everything up and she runs like an angry sewing machine!
Now I can start to save some money for a rebuild!
Thanks for the help.
