So I have been remiss in posting up here.
The 62 decided to give up the Connecting Rod bearing on #6 back in December. I was more than slightly peeved at myself as The oil level being inadequate was the likely cause.
So I parked it and waited till First part of this month to deal with it. 5 hours of pulling down the oil pan later the #6 bearing was completely destroyed, no visible damage on the crank shaft though so new bearings were ordered. After replacing the connecting rod bearings with standard size and putting it all back together, it made it about 50 miles before the knock was back.
So now it sits in my yard.

I guess looking for advice, the 3FE crank is available used for around 300. I can pull the motor and have mine machined but by whom?

The real bitch of it is that I only needed to make it till next february and it will have its final E-Check and then time for a SBC.

Dave

Does the engine have good compression otherwise? If yes, then just get the crank machined by a competent shop, and get new Clevite japanese bearings. If you're careful, you can pull the crank straigh up out of the block and leave the pistons parked.

I can name a few good machine shops in Columbus. Dunno about eastside cleveland though.

Or skip fixing the 3FE. Pull it and sell it to someone building a 2FE. Do your SBC swap and park it until the calender says you can run it again. Get a beater car for the time you gotta wait on the Man to let you do what you want with yer truck.

If you decide to fix it I'd say it's worth it to haul the parts to a shop Jim trusts. Seems to be a challenge to find a good shop anymore. FWIW I'm planning on dropping a motor with Jim's machinist this weekend for some work.

Good luck...

I think it will have to just chill out till spring when I could pull the motor out of the truck and pull the crank. I was referred to a local machinist to make it work. Don't know just kind of frustrated with it right now. I have my beater subaru that I need to get rid of as I do not know if it will pass e check and just expired last week as far as registration. A car payment does not sound like fun but I am kind of burnt out on fixing beaters, Perhaps the 62 will go up for sale. Not sure at this point. the 40 will not be going out again till spring ( and less road salt )

Just for the sake of research how much should the turning of the crank set someone back? and is there any concieveable way to pull the crank without pulling the motor out of the truck?

Dave

To remove the crank with engine in truck would be more trouble. It would mean rmoving the trans, and then trying to push the repaired crank back up into place from the bottom. Yuck.

turning the crank should be $150.

Jim,

Would he need to pull the trans with an auto? Just push the tork convertor into the trans and drop the crank/flex plate out? Or is that adapter plate in the way? Uggh, still much easier to pull the whole motor on a 62.

Nick

Now that I think about it the bearing cap bolts on the rear bearing would be in the way of Trans Housing, I Looked at an 07 tundra double cab TRD package last night on the way home.
only 19000 reasons not to go that route.
Dave

Correct. Easier to unbolt the adapter plate from the trans and pull the engine out, rather than pulling tranny out, then adapter plate, then try to get the crank out the bottom without removing the front timing plate...

Unfortunately reality has struck, There is a 2006 Subaru Outback in my garage next to the 40. Not a bad price and a pretty decent little lesbo wagon. It will work.
Thinking about Selling the 62 as is, I know I should keep it just not sure if I want to take on the project at this point.
Will See.

I have been driving my 05 XT 5 sp Outback for 3 years now. The cars bore you to death, they always start and never break down.

EXCEPT.....there is a factory service extension on the rear wheel bearings. FYI. I had a noise and dealer checked and repalced for no cost. I though it was tires and after $$$$ it was still there :frown:

Send it to Jim's spa. After a month or two luxuriating in it's warm confines your Cruiser will be better than new... :hillbilly:
