FJ62 AC Belt Removal

Hey guys. I just bought my friend's old '89 and have since been logging some major time on here. So here is my question: The AC belt belt is sqealing and the compressor is rattling and the AC doesn't work. I don't really want to deal with replacing the system right now, can I just disconnect the belt to the compressor without any ill effects? Thanks.
