I don't think they did. In the USA. I have an 87 (last year before going to 62) and its a 4 speed.

reason i ask is aim looking at an 85 which he says he swithched some parts to an 84 because he converted his 84 to a five speed, any clue?
any difference in 84 and 85 trans , t case , drive shaft

I have a 5/85 FJ-60 and it came with the 4 speed transmission with a spacer between the transmission and transfer. This spacer makes the 4 speed the same length as the 5 speed. This makes conversion to the 5 speed transfer that much easier--the location of the transfer case doesn't change and you don't need to change driveshaft lengths, etc.

85 USA 4 speed has a spacer between the tranny and transfer. Non-USA got the 5speed (which is longer than the 4-speed). Thus, installation of a 5-speed into an 85 or later is essentially bolt-in. If you put the 5-speed into an 84 (or earlier) then you have to relocate the tranny crossmember, and change lengths of the driveshafts.

Doug-Just to clarify, the crossmember remains the same, in the same place with the same mount. Only the driveshafts have to be shortened/lengthened and the later t-case linkage must be used.

For the original poster, USA trucks NEVER came with a 5 speed.
