Guys, Please forgive me for the possible and very likely repost but this seems like such a broad topic and i did search but i get so much stuff its hard to determine what is right.

I have a 1985 fj60 with 295k miles. The truck has had the carb rebuilt a very long time ago but recently we've had problems with getting it to warm up.

Even on the coldest mornings it will usually start up fine and idle alright with the choke out.

The problem is, if you try to drive it without letting it warm up for at least 20 minutes, it will just want to sputter out and die as soon as you give it some gas. Is this a carb issue and does it sound like its time to rebuild?

Yes, your T-stat is most likely split or one of the gaskets is not in there. Just put in a new one, be careful not to break the the bolts holding the housing together.
Good luck

I'm not sure how much this would affect the performance of the engine during warm-up 20 min out vs. 2-5 min out, but you could check the vacuum operated flap in the air cleaner intake tube- I checked mine just out of curiousity and found that the diaphragm that is supposed to pull up the flap when started cold was dead. A used diaphragm (new not available) fixed the problem. However, since there were other starting/running problems at the time, I can't say how much effect the repair had.

Guys,
This actually isnt my truck, but rather its my brothers and to be totally honest i havent yet taken a whole lot of time to play with it. I've been talking to jim chenowith about carbs and if the carb is the problem, its probably the way i will go. I didnt think about the t-stat however and might start there since its relatively cheap, i also might try to run some seafoam through the carb or some bg44k to see if that can help clean some stuff out.
Any other suggestions for some good carb cleaner? maybe redline.

If its got an issue with warming up in the first few minutes, make sure the flex tube between the intake and the heat riser is secure. Its really easy to check and makes a big difference in the warm up time

how are the manifolds? If I am not mistaken, don't the manifolds have an impact on heating the carb and warming the fuel in cold weather for a more effective fuel burn?

Doesn't sound like primarily a temp problem to me. Make sure the accel pump is working right. Maybe too lean in the primary to.

Check your tire pressure too.
