Correct me if Im wrong...but lets say theres a 1987 FJ60 being parted out - I COULD do a front axle swap and end up with disc brakes on my 74 40 - right? Isnt it pretty straightforward from a 60 to 40?
Id decided to stick with what Ive got (drum brakes and no power steering) UNLESS a really good deal comes up..Any opinions?

Someone say yes theyve done it and its so easy a girl could do it. Itd be awesome.:D

Hubs out yes easy. Swap the entire axle not so much.

Meant knuckles out.

you would want to swap knuckles as darin said to get the brakes

the axle itself would be 2'' 2 wider than a stock 40 axle and brackets might need massaging
but im sure its still easy enough a girl could do it :) and theres a hubby and a club to help im sure

Just change the birf from the donor and keep you axels.

Knuckles, birf. You also need the master cylinder.

I don't know, I saw a 60 being parted out and got to wondering..maybe ill contact the seller and see what the asking price and the condition/availability.
Just a bit much to seriously consider right this second..after all...the apocalypse is coming! :)

if im not mistaking, 60/62 birfs are the same as mini truck birfs. You would need to clearance the inners of the knuckle balls on the axle to fit the birfs in the 40 axle. If you run the entire 60/62 axle under the 40, youll need to outboard the passenger side leaf springs/hangers to line-up with the spring perch.

Not having ever owned either of those models, I believe Martin is right. The 60/62 birfs can be swapped to mini truck axles with no problems, but there is a slight difference with the 40 birfs.

Spot on here. Birfields on a 60/62/mini are larger than 40 series birfields from the factory and therefore the knuckle ball on a 40 axle needs to be clearanced a bit. A couple of minutes with a grinder and you're good to go. No structural loss in doing this.

The 60 has a wider knuckle stud pattern than the 40 and is therefore stronger.

The FJ60 / 62 axle width is 58" WMS ( wheel mounting surface ). To swap 60 axles onto a 40, you typically have to outboard your springs due to the 60 differential being closer towards the outside of the vehicle than on a 40. FWIW, the 40 / 55 WMS is 54" or 55" IIRC and the 80 series WMS is 63".

Also, the 62 housing is trussed on the bottom DS side, whereas the 60 axle is not.
