I need some diagnostic help. In the mornings the truck runs like a sewing machine, and will do so for several days on end. Sometimes while driving it will start to spudder a little bit, then wont keep an idle for anything. I end up having to choke it a little. Recently, I had the manifold resurfaced and the gaskets changed, the carb was rebuilt, along with a new insulator, and egr valve. When the engine is shut off, it will diesel and backfire. Sometimes, while driving when the idle is messing up, the engine will spudder again, then idle perfectly. I had a problem with the furthest back vacuum on the engine side of the carb whistling, so I clamped it off. What is the purpose of this port? Anyone think it could be controlling the problem? Also, would the psv grommet play a role in such an ordeal? I have a replacement, but the old one was kind of difficult to get out.

Anyone have any possible solutions? This is beginning to drive me crazy, not being able to determine the source of the problem.

Any help is most considerably welcome!

My first guess is the EGR valve is getting stuck open which would cause it to idle like crap. All the ports on the carb should be connected espcially if you are still all smogged.

If you are looking across the valve cover at the carb and left to right the ports are....top left-fuel cut port.. bottom left-advancer port... middle-HAC slow port... right -EGR R port.

I would replace the PCV grommet if it is bad but doubt it is related.
