Are the Toyota "splits" truely a split wheel?
No they are not. And there are no bolts., just the ring.
If done improperly they can kill you. Just like when jacking up the vehicle to change your tire (or tyre), think about SAFETY and don’t do anything stupid!

I guess the one thing I think about is this: yes there is always a chance of being hurt, however from the sound of the replies, you can change a split rim on the trail if a need be, but no one can change a normal tire/wheel without a machine, correct?
The problem here is this. Do you carry spares without the wheel? Does one really need to take the tire off the rim. With splits you do need to so that you can repair the tube. With tubeless you can simply carry a good plug kit and use that instead. I think tubeless is the less hassles approach for most situations, especially in the US.

And you can change a normal tire with a set of spoons and some soap. I don't want to do it (I have taken them off that way but never remounted) but a friend of mine can do it. I takes practice I would say.

my gawd, i had no idea you guys were so sick... split rims are cool??? every cruiser i've bought has come with about 6 spare split rims that i cant get rid of, without throwing them off a cliff :D
Yes, original Cruiser stuff is cool, especially to us Yanks that didn't get it. I wouldn't talk about cool if I were you, I saw so many freak 40's on your big island. I guess purple metallic, blue with yellow fenders, and other "cool" paint combos should be a standard upgrade on the 40. LOL!

split rims are the choice for toyota in oz.They are the easyest thing to work on,run over the one side of the wheel takes care off the beed. there are not any bolts. The lock on the beed is held by presure in the tyre. You can have 2 beers and change the flat in 30 min.

And it's doable to fix a flat without removing the wheel from the truck as long as the wheel isn't rusty (they always are) and you've got a big tireman's hammer.

I've heard that there's an Australian gizmo called "tyre-plyer" or something that makes changing tubeless tires a snap?

there are good new tools for theese wheels but i was showen ate the age of ten to change tyes in the middle of the dessert with limited tools.

As late as ten, huh? Are you handicapped? :)

I meant to ask about new tools that make changing NON - split wheeled tires an easy thing that come out of Australia or are only available there.

yep, that's the way... i mean fair enough do an original resto IF you have to be that benign :)... but for most of us, it's a weekend warrior/ daily driver.. gotta spruce em up somehow... and there are US rigs with different colored fenders too... but in Aus i guarentee most of them are closer to toyota than most the ones in the US that get used... D60 axle pffftttt

actually funny thing about that, in the last 2 offroad events i watched, 2 40's had D60 axles with upgraded uni's etc, and both retired from both comps due to failure... kingpin failure, the uni cups (whatever their called) breaking... and they were stuck for parts... where as the ones running regular axles would borrow axles and stuff from the spectators cars and return them at the end of a comp

You know, I have always found that interesting. Our local bookstore was carrying 4wd Monthly for a bit, and I noticed that competion rigs pretty much ran factory axles, whether Cruiser or HiLux or Patrol. And some buggies or jeeps ran 80series or Patrol axles under them with big tires and they never complained about tons of breakage or anything. But the US 4x media makes you think if it isnt a Corp14 or Dana60 it will snap with anything bigger then a 35".

yep... nissan axles are tuff as.

the yota ones with a local companies heat treated CV's run pretty good success rate with occasional breakage... but that's in comp rigs

one guy runs hilux (minitruck) axles under his comp buggy, 39's a lexus V8 and he is always on the loud pedal and has never broken a CV (he;s done a drive plate once... but that was insane i was standing 10 feet from it) and i think a 3rd. heat treated cv's, stock inners

Thank you dennis, I stand corrected. Does anyone have a pic of the split rim? I really dont know what we are talking about. I know the big rigs and planes. A pic would help me understand.

Amen to that, honestly what it comes down to is ego. There are many in the US that think everything has to be bigger, faster, V8 powered, etc. But really if you want Dana axles, 350s, and centered rear diffs, buy a Jeep. I think if you really love Cruisers and enjoy owning a TOYOTA, then strive to make what is already great a little better, then you can truely say that you own a Land Cruiser!

I've had my tall skiiny 7x16's on split rims aired down to 10 on hell's revenge in moab. No issues but it was a little too low for the size tire. I usually air my set up to about 15-16 if I do at all but this is a tall skinny tire.

Was always the rookie's job

Dunno how many split rims I had to change.

Worked in the dessert in central australia duing uni summer holidays. As the youngest, and most recent hire, I did ALL the split rim tire repairs. Got it down to art.

A crew came in with 4 of the bloody things - had 'em all done before beer time :)

Oh - frst post by the way !

Hey Bull,
What's your method for getting the bead away from the ring. It's easy to pop off the ring but I always have a hell of a time pushing the bead away from the ring. I've tried driving over a corner of the tire etc.
