After the 40 gets out of the body shop to fix the rust areas and for painting, I want to add power steering to replace the worn out steering it has now. So here are the questions.

1. Where to buy the conversion items? Not looking for junk yard parts but want something I can depend on.
2. Is there anyone who can help with the install locally? I am not a welder or a fabricator and would welcome some professional or experienced help.

Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi David.

First job will involve locking down on which conversion you wish to do. Saginaw, FJ60, Astro Van, or some hybrid. Each has advantage and there are many threads in the 40 tech section for reading.

Example .... the 60 setup does not provide as much boost/turning power as the saginaw, but that would only really be important to big tire trail guys. As such it would be easier to get a toyota pump mounted to your stock engine. I'm not as well-versed on the 60 setup as folks like Johnny so will let him pipe in about details.

As for the saginaw setup, new pumps and boxes are available for these but when added to other conversion parts (steering shaft, custom hoses, spud shaft, pillow block, etc) the $$ can add up. The only reason I went with saginaw is because I already had a bunch of the parts sitting around and because I was mounting my pump to a chevy engine.

In terms of dependability I would not hesitate to put on FJ60 parts from a cruiser being parted out. Impossible to rule out that one day something won't go kurphluey but they really are fairly dependable.

EDIT: I went back and saw you made mention of PS conversion parts that were on order in your introduction thread. What parts/kit is that referring to?

This is an example of a 60 series box conversion with a saginaw power steering pump on @custyota 's FJ40. It keeps the steering gear all Toyota while giving you really nice turning power.

I still have a 60 series PS box with a Saginaw pump on my 4BT. It turns my DD 37s just fine and my offroad 39.5s acceptably well. I can't imagine a saginaw box being much better. The big improvement would be adding ram assist, but that's only for big tires.

Point is, the 60 series box with a saginaw steering pump works really well.

EDIT:
- I need to say that I've never driven a truck with a saginaw PS box, so I don't have any basis of comparison. I can say that the 60 series box with the Saginaw is a HUGE improvement over the 60 series box with the stock PS pump.
