I have gotten into my replacement '77 2F engine into my 76. Noticed there was a gap in the intake manifold gasket. So I took off the entire manifold and now have to decide can I get the intake separated from the exhaust manifold to replace the gasket(it is where the heater return, I think) or do I just go with headers since I have to separate anyway. If headers then which 6-1 or true duel? And which brand? Advice Please
Where exactly is the 'gap' in the manifold gasket? Did you have a leak there?
Or after installing the motor and then the intake/exhaust manifold it did not bolt up flush with the block?
Since youve separated from the block (actually got a new one) have you had the manifolds machined flat? if not you will want to. They can do that once you have them bolted back together w/ fresh gaskets but dont go unbolting them after that. That might explain the gap if it was b/w the flange and the block.
if its the gasket b/w the intake and exhaust at teh heat riser then you could consider headers or make sure the heat riser spring works and search about a blockoff plate there, im not 100% familiar. At that point I went to 3Fe manifold which acts almost like a set of headers. read trollholes big gay 2f build or there is some info with pics in my 2f into the 55 thread.
I cant comment on any other headers... .i know the 6 into 1's can get hot. Might search the 40s tech on the natl. forum about "headers" tons of info im sure.
good luck, post pics and keep us posted on the progress
Thanks for the info Jason. It looks like this has been discussed before but I was not hear so I had to ask. Bought this engine from someone so not sure if it leaked. The gap I am speaking of is at the heat riser. I assume it was not to have a gap. I took the entire maifold off as one piece. My concern is separating the intake from the manifold to replace the gasket, I know I have to either way. Just wanted opinion if I should go back with headers or orginial system. I'm sure I'll have to carry it all somewhere and have it done. Thanks again.
