Hi All,
1984 FJ40 with two rear doors. Being converted from soft top to hardtop. Two doors cover the entire rear area.

When one rear door is in the closed position, upper portion of the rubber on rear door is
placed in a stepped section of the stock hardtop and lower portion of the rubber on
rear door is placed in the stepped section on the stock tub. Are these two sections on
the tub and the hardtop supposed to be fully aligned ? It is my understanding that these sections cannot be aligned. Check alignment in picture

mine lines up all the way down, not stepped like yours, is yours an after market tub? there was a thread on the same subject a couple months ago not sure if it got resolved.

my tub is stock and my hardtop is stock. Would there be any pictures of your section.

Not a good pic but all i have, this is when i first brought it home, its rough.

I also don't have a fancy gasket either.

Notice that rear door has two sections. When rear door is closed the lower section of the door aligns with the tub and upper section of the rear door aligns with the hardtop. So alignment of tub and hardtop has to be different perhaps.

the top hangs off the back a bit but it still lines up where the front doors are, i don't have any more pictures because i am running topless right now. Someone else might chime in.

Hi
A photo of the rear door of my 1982 FJ 40
You are right on the alignment as the photo shows.
The difference is taken up on the door seal.
Hope this helps
Cheers

thanks very much Bambi, you are a life saver. What is the approx. size (especially thickness) of the rubber which is placed between the stock tub and stock hardtop. Thanks again.

Hi
That seal you ask of is OEM .
Not near my build today but from memory I would say say the thickness of the rubber would be 1/8 or 3 mm.
For all the Toyota rubbers I found OEM are the only way to go.
They may be a bit more of an out lay in the beginning but they fit and most important the OEM seals have the correct compression when it comes to body panel sealing.
Cheers
